Paphos Covid ward caring for 27 patients, all but one unvaccinated

Twenty-seven patients are currently hospitalised at the two Covid-19 ward in Paphos General and all but one are unvaccinated, according to the hospital director.

In addition, the ages of patients are generally younger than previously seen.

“Although we have patients of all ages, we are seeing that many are younger than before, most are in their 50s, this may be due to the Delta variant and we are advocating that everyone gets vaccinated,” Spyros Georgiou told the Cyprus Mail on Friday.

Of the 27 patients, only one has received both shots of a Covid vaccination and Georgiou is unsure of the patient has any underlying health conditions. The rest are unvaccinated.

“They are in a stable condition at the moment, that is all the information I have. All of the patients are receiving oxygen as this is necessary,” he said.

In July, Paphos general hospital reopened its Covid ward for the second time during the coronavirus pandemic to help relieve the strain on state hospitals. Extra staff have been brought in.

“The number of patients has stabilised and their conditions are progressing satisfactorily and staff are working very hard, it is a difficult time for everyone,” he said.

Both Covid wards have reopened, which have 32 beds in total. One has a 22-bed capacity and the other 10.

Most of the staff and medical professionals are vaccinated already and the remainder have SafePasses.

Although the hospital is continuing to function as normally as possible, only emergency operations are being carried out at the moment. Other procedures are being rescheduled, he said.

“We are continuing to administer the vaccine doses here at the hospital where we also have a walk-in clinic. At present we have both Pfizer and Moderna shots, and other may be available in the coming days.”

Paphos is leading the way with the number of vaccines administered and Georgiou urged those that are yet unvaccinated to do so.

“Along with the other measures this is the way forwards. We must do everything we can and try everything we can to beat this pandemic and move forwards,” he said.
