Paphos People

Just removed an Hibiscus hedge ,due to infestation, and now looking to replace with something fast growing that will give privacy around pool area. Would welcome suggestions from Paphos People. Thanks

but what was the hibiscus hedge infested with?

interested as I was thinking of a hibiscus hedge...for privacy..they are so beautiful

White scaly insect , which has destroyed many Hibiscus shrubs in the area. Once established difficult to eliminate.

Why did you remove it?? Why didn't you cut it right back and treat it ??

That was my thought too.Takes so long to grow a mature one that it seems a shame to rip it out when it can be treated.

It was removed because we have empty properties either side of us and the infection spread from there and even with cutting down , spraying etc. it keeps on coming back.

Ficus Benjamina makes a good hedge (but no flowers) and is quite fast growing, keep it trimmed or it will make 18-20 feet.

Red Robin would be a good choice, but Polygala is the one we chose.
It originates in South Africa, is very drought tolerent, grows about 60cm a season when established, no thorns & is easy to maintain.

Topgun, you might well "be back" - but you're 4 years too late. Stormy's hibiscus hedge met its end in 2011!
However, I'm sure your advice will be helpful to somebody else.

Be careful with ficus Benjamin's. We have three mature trees and have been treating them for insect infestation since the summer (a sort of white fly). Apparently it's a problem at the moment here. Most of the leaves have fallen off, and we have removed bags and bags of leaves.

we had the same last year
it was awful and we almost lost our hedge, we sprayed to kill the white fly

then this year we went early to Plant Fix on the Mesogi Rd ( Polis Rd)
they gave us some powder that we had to put onto and around the roots in spring time, and then water fully in, apparently the white fly hates the smell of the stuff as it is drawn up from the roots to the branches

we have had no white fly this year

but the devastation it caused last year is still evident yet, it is terrible a problem

Hi thanks for the info. Is plant fix the place opposite London supermarket.
We have been spraying with neem oil, can you remember what the powder was called.
Must try it in the spring, got to be better than all this spraying .

not sure where the London Market is....sorry

But it is on the right hand side as you drive up the what we call the Police Rd

Our neighbors used Neem oil on their Hibiscus and had limited results with it

the white fly is one that only affects Ficas and it can be deadly to the plant .

Maybe go and ask now what Plant fix think might help your trees
