MY mum bought me a lemon tree and a mandarin tree when she was over. They are young trees and I have planted them in my garden. I read somewhere that they are probably lacking zinc and iron and was wondering where I can get these items. Is there a friendly nursery around that would help me at minimal cost? I can do the hard work but where we bought the trees there was a language difficulty. My trees look a little sad and need some help. Any advice please. Sarah |

Iron in greek is "SEE-THERE-RO" ... i've bought small (maybe 50gr) bags a few times and then mix 5gr into 500ml of water and just pour around at night. presumably the iron slowly saturates through with subsequent waterings. If it was me i'd water regularly in small amounts until Christmas, then prune in February and start water heavily a couple of times per month from April. Not added any Zync though. I have lemon tree i planted 18months when it was 2-3 years old (trunk not even 1" diameter) and have really cut it back hard twice to generate growth where i want it - don't be afraid - cutting in February seems to work fine ! If it all goes wrong they are cheap ! |

To what extent does one water a lemon tree? I have noticed that mine seem to prefer watering only every so often and not every day...........is there a rule of thumb I should follw? Chris |

I was told you should let the soil dry almost completely before watering. |

We have a lemon tree - here when we moved in. We got leave curl and no sign of lemons. I think it may be done for! |

There appear to be different opinions on the matter of watering generally, but the one i follow is to water infrequently for longer periods as opposed to short frequent waterings. My wife cousin has orange plantation and they water 3-4 times during summer but when doing so the field is like a lake for half a day whilst the water evaporates/sinks in, their mature trees produce loads of big fruit. Citrus leaf miner can ruin the lemon tree leaves if not treated on a 2 weekly basis from Apr-Oct. I`d trim back all the new growth that has curled and spray whilst new growth is visibly coming through until its no longer bright green. With the up/down weather earlier this year (week in March at 30) our tree lost the plot i think so we also have no lemons this year. |

What do you recommend for leaf miner please? although there appears to be no evidence of it as yet I have suffered badly on my cherry tomatoes (I was advised to leave them alone as it didn't damage the fruit - just looks unsightly!!) chris |

When I bought an orange and lemon tree from the nursery along the B6 , before you get to the airport, the owner advised me to water once every 15 days and only 1 litre of water. Also to spray every 15 days. I have a small crop of lemons. Feed the trees every 21 days . Once the trees have matured then leave them alone , apart from pruning in February. |
