Hi It's Martha Clarke again with a new question. When furniture is being freighted is it the responsibilty of the customer to wrap/box possessions, or do the movers do this? thanks in advance for replies.

With most shipping companies both scenarios are an option.
Doing your own packing can save you money.
However this can also be a false economy as the shipping companies will not generally insure goods against "damage in transit" if you pack them yourself.

We packed things like bedding, towels, personal clothing and possessions. Electricals, white goods and large furniture - we let them do the packing.

The choice of insurance was left up to us. However, some things are irreplaceable such as family mementos, photos, jewellery gifts and no amount of insurance payout will ever replace these kind of items.

Our belongings and those belonging to another friend of ours sharing the container all arrived in good order and arrived sooner than expected. That was 6yrs ago.

I have just packed up our house and to save a bit of money we packed most of the ordinary "cupboard" stuff ourselves, clothes, kitchenware, etc, however, we left the big stuff like our settee, tv, larger kitchen items, and chests of drawers/wardrobes to the packers who wrapped up everything in very thick brown paper/bubble wrap/boxes (I'm sure there's a more technical name for it but I don't know it!! :? ) I think it all depends what moving company you use and what you agree with them in your negotiations!

Good luck

A
