Can anyone advise the situation concerning a club requiring a member to take a product they sell when the member purchases something else..............in this case its a clay pigeon shooting club that makes members pay for a box of cartridges when paying for a round of 25 clay targets even though the member may not want the cartridges as they don't use the type of cartridge sold by the club....................to complicate matters the club is based in the western SBA and is a british military club.

I thought that under EU and UK law it was illegal to make a consumer buy something else they don't want when purchasing another product.

Are we talking about the Episkopi Gun Club?
http://www.episkopi-garrison-gunclub.com/membershipinstruction.html

If so, they might have covered themselves in their prices by saying the cartridges are ‘included’ in your fee and not an additional / required purchase

“A round of Clays & Cartridges (25) is €7 for Entitled Members, otherwise €9”

Thanks for this Dave, but what bothers me is that this was only introduced recently whereas previously I could pay for a round of clays separately and use my own cartridges - now I am obliged to buy theirs as well and I don't want them, but still have to pay for the cartridges.

I suspect this practice is called bundling and as such I also believe it is illegal under EU Consumer Law as it effectively removes my right to choose what I buy, similar to the case of Microsoft bundling its browser software with its operating system.

Still think they might catch you with "you pay for shooting, the cartridges are free"

I presume that although you take their cartridges, you can still use your own. If not, that puts a different light on it.

MAYBE it's to stop shooters turning up with their own 'over powered' cartridges

You can still use your own but are left with cartridges you don't want - it feels a bit like walking into papas and being greeted with "Good morning sir, here is your box of nappies that you have to buy with the rest of your shopping"

As regards over-powered cartridges that isn't the case - its just to try and extract as much money out of shooters as possible.

€7 for 25 clays and 25 cartridges still seems very good value even if you don't use the cartridges. Sell them to the Cypriot hunters  They will fire anything

Those cartridges are not suitable for hunting dave as the shot sizes are too small and would would more than kill, so no that isn't an option.

Chris is the club open to non member novices. I have a birthday coming up for someone who would probably enjoy such an event.

Up until a while ago I would have said yes doug, but there is a current crackdown on non-military activities so I would need to check and let you know - what did you have in mind?

Am thinking of a birthday present for someone who hasn't shot before but I know it will be exciting to her.

Its also the kind of thing thats small groups of 5-6 would enjoy.
