We have just been down to Civilian services to apply for a health card and, although we are going to get one, it will only be valid until Jan 2014 (6 months) despite our S1 covering us until late 2015! We were told that the government will be withdrawing ALL expat health cards as of Jan 14 unless you have proof of at least 36 months social services payments here on the island.

Not too sure how legal this is in the EU as we have paid our dues in an EU country and should be able to get the same service elsewhere. You can if you go to the UK!

It's very frustrating when like you say "you've paid your dues". The UK should do exactly the same for non nationals especially all these health tourists that take money out of the system without paying a bean.

Sorry to hear about your problems, will you consider leaving now? :celeb2

I might be wrong, but I thought the 36 month ruling was going to apply to EVERYONE, not just non-Cypriots.....

UK - No I am not thinking of leaving. I have spent a long time thinking about the move we made here last year and I still feel it worth it, no matter how frustrating it may be! :taz

PW - I am only going on what the girl at CS told us the other day.

Be careful with some information provided from this centre, we have found that it can be both outdated & erroneous.
I think the problem is that they don't check if there is something that they don't know for sure. They make up what appears a plausable answer, which sometimes results in you making a wasted journey.
If you go back & inform them their advice was incorrect, as we did so that others may benefit, they just shrug & say things must have changed!
They do have my sympathy though, administrative communication is a skill still in embryo in Cyprus.

Wonder how that works for people who covered by an E121 then?

I have phoned Newcastle this morning and nobody there knows anything about this, I also phoned British Consulate in Nicosia and could not yet get a definitive answer if a UK pensioner would have to pay these charges at the hospital reception and if I did would i get retribution from UK Health service which pays for our medical needs here in Cyprus (I have paid into UK system for 50 years before I retired here in Cyprus) I can't see in the article today's Cyprus Mail if the charge is relevant to your yearly earnings which I had to declare when I filled in the form to get (E121)
