Post subject:  Settling final bills

Hi All I'm new to the forum and wondered if anyone could help.
Mum has sold her property this last week due to ill health and although I'm travelling out for a few days to help her pack up she is really concerned because 'apparently' after to calling to cancel her 'water, electric, landline and sewage' she's been told she has to travel up to town in person to do this.
Mum isn't well at all and struggles to walk any distance does anyone know if there's any way round this. I've said I'll do it when I get there but mum assures me I'll have enough to do in the apartment.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Someone will have to go , plus they will want to finalize the bills (take meter readings) then they will send the deposits back by post ...

As Neil has said, you do have to go in person to cancel everything .Refuse and water at the local municipality offices, electric and phone at their offices on the day you vacate the property . Maybe her Lawyer can do this for her as he will have the proof of sale of the property which all will require to actually cancel everything.
Ask him first to see what he can do .

Any decent lawyer will clear all final bills, taxes, etc for you out of the sale proceeds before finalizing payment of the proceeds to you.

Part of the tax clearance process is to have all the utilites read, settled and (if necessary, transferred to the new owner). Your agent should have done this for you, if not then supply the final readings to the solicitor you are using he/she should do it.
