Why do other dog charities often condemn Paphiakos for charging €200 for a dog - it really annoys me! I do appreciate that it is a lot of money and can put some people off having a dog BUT for this money you get the animal innoculated, spayed or neutered, microchipped etc etc . So if you have a dog from one of the other charities you either get them free or make a donation but surely then it is going to cost you around €200 for the treatments as described above. At least with Paphiakos they are ensuring by making you pay up front that the animal will be neutered, chipped etc thereby creating less future problems. How many people have their dogs free and then don't go ahead with what needs doing?

By the way I think ALL the pet charities here do amazing work and all deserve medals!

I personally have not heard other charities slagging off Paphiakos for their charges. But I will say I find there is alot of politics with some charities and I avoid it. All the charities and their volunteers here do an amazing job, and I applaud them.

Maybe by charging 200 euro Paphiakos are doing a spot of 'weeding out'. Ensuring only people that are genuine about having a dog and looking after it, if they pay 200 euro it means they are serious and won't just let the dog loose when they get fed up, which may happen if someone gets a dog for free or for a small donation.

I have never heard other animal charities "slagging off" Paphiakos. Quite the reverse in fact.
Regarding the charges that Paphiakos make, I can see both sides of the argument.
We had a rescue cat from them and they insisted we had to pay up front for it's spaying and injections.
I personally object to this as I did not want their vet to do this work for my own reasons which I am not prepared to discuss.
It was made worse for us that they did not tell us that we would have to pay "up front" until we had chosen our new pet.
I wanted our regular vet who has spayed/neutered all our other cats and several ferals at our expense but It was made quite clear that if we wanted the cat this was NOT an option. Wrong in my opinion.
My personal gripe with ALL the re-homing charities is that as far as I am aware they do not do any checks on the house or people the animal is going to.
I think they should.

I have edited my original post as I think "slagging off" was a bit strong and apologise. I stand by the fact though that 2 charities have condemned the charging policy!
Sevener I fully understand where you are coming from re wanting your own vet to do any work and I really don't know the answer to this. I also agree wholeheartedly that checks should be made on suitability and maybe a deal to get cheaper training for dogs as we certainly needed help with ours! I think many people, me included, need education re caring for animals as many like myself had not had animals for many years - certainly 30 years since I had had a puppy and it was quite a learning curve!!

I do not believe in discussing any charity policies, but would be grateful if you could let me know the 2 charities who have condemned the policy (by pm please), as this is something that should not be discussed.

My argument would be that even if they have paid 200 euro plus for a dog, they still do not think of getting the rabies shot done immediately (or after it is 3 months old), then the blood test one month later to ensure if they do need to go back their dog can go back with them. They then just leave them with one of the shelters which is really bad for some dogs who have been in a home for years then all of a sudden they are no longer wanted.

All my dogs are pet passported, although I hope there is no need for this, but one never knows.

Can I add that all dogs going to Germany from CYDRA, the homes are checked by our sister organisation and sometimes more than five homes will be turned down before the right one is found for a dog. Yes, I am biased but we are here to help all dogs and whilst some of us might have personal opinions it is not the opinion of our organisation as a whole to be political in any way.
