We are hoping to re-locate to Paphos in the New Year bringing our 4 dogs (2 golden retrievers and 2 Cavalier King Charles spaniels) with us. I've been somewhat alarmed at the reports of infected ticks and dog poisonings. How safe is it for our 'pampered pooches'? Are they better protected if they just have lead walks in built up areas? I understand they need tick collars or some form of tick prevention. Also can you get Chappie dried food in Paphos? It would be a shame to have to wean them off it with all the associated problems.

For safety keep your dogs on leads anywhere out of your own property. Remember we have snakes here and the poisoning of pets is quite often reported. Plus a lot of the insecticides used are lethal to animals too. Just giving you the best advice I can although you could panic a bit reading this.

I have three rescue dogs and none are let off their leads to keep them out of harms way - start teaching your dogs to leave any food outside (if you have not already done so). Can't help you regarding the food though, as Neil says contact Gill & Pete at Shampooch who will help you any way they can.

With regard ticks everybody finds what is best for them and it is a matter of trial and error. During the tick season if what you are using isn't working you will know within a few days - I hate the things with a vengeance.

It seem as though it depends on the area you are moving to,our dog goes without a lead and has had no problems with snakes or poison although he did pick up rather a lot of tics earlier in the year.
A visit to D&N for an injection and the tics just fell off him.
We live close to Tsada if that is any help. :smilielol

Depending where you live, flea and tick treatment can last about 3 weeks in the summer. Depending on the size of your dogs, spot on treatments can cost approx €10 per dog, per 3 weeks! Look on-line. Some suppliers will not ship to the UK but will happily ship to Cyprus. If you have small dogs, maybe one large spot on treatment will do two dogs. I do 8 cats with one extra large dog spot on flea treatment. You may want to do the math and bring it with you!

When it's warm you can treat for fleas and ticks and then when it's cooler, fleas and earmites - all very complicated!

You may also need to get Scalibor collars. Injections for leishmania are also available but they cost approx €150 over a course of 3 injections. It is certainly not cheap to keep dogs critter free!

Don't buy flea and tick stuff from pet shops unless it's one you can buy from a vet ie Stroghold, Frontline, Advantix. I recently overheard a pet shop owner trying to flog a woman something for earmites - if you go to your vet they can give you a spot on - not something you have to keep putting in your dogs ears every few days. Plus the vet can check to see there isn't any infection.

People may say you can take your dogs off lead to walk, however most people do not recommend it.

You should also get a anti venom kit from your vet. Some of the poison used is so deadly it can kill an animal in minutes regardless of whether you used a anti venom kit or not. As will all things animal, the best thing is to ask your vet.
