Post subject:  4 surprises !!

Hi :greetings

I`m new here and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice ?

Yesterday, a cat who has been in the area for a month or so, sneaked into our spare bedroom and gave birth to 4 kittens under the quilt on the bed. I have never been so shocked in my life ! The mother is obviously young and I think this may be her first litter.

24 hours on and the kittens seem fine, but I notice one of them has diarrhoea and Mum doesn`t seem to be cleaning them very well. Mum has obviously been someones pet at some time and will let me stroke her.

My question is - is it normal for tiny kittens to get runny bottys ?

Any hints or tips on how I can help Mum would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Ive had the same problem over the last 12 months with Ferrel cats sneaking in to give birth, only this time in my car....happened again last Wednesday night, (thats 3 times now) but my car is pink!!!.... Depends on whether you plan to keep them or not, If you do mabye a trip to the vets, with Mother, to get them checked out, If they are ferrels they may have not been fed proparly while mother was carrying them. If you dont plan to keep them I suggest you take them to the animal welfare, along with Mom before you get too attached to them.
I had to do this last week to "Pinkie", as Id named her, & her 2 kittens, there is also another one around that was born last year in my car that is very pregnant, just need to catch her.

Must admit kittens are soooo cute but you cant, unfortunately, keep them all, far too many.

Good Luck

Post subject:  Re: 4 surprises !!

We came from the UK with one cat, then ..... we now have 3 !

I must admit that we felt sorry for Mum and did feed her when she turned up. We did wonder if she was someones pet but surely she wouldn`t come to our house to have her kittens if she lived elsewhere?

We can`t keep them - and yes I know what you mean, I`m already attached to them. They are so cute. Where would be the best animal welfare place to take them to ?

Thank you for your help. I`m still in a tizz after all this excitement.

Post subject:  Re: 4 surprises !!

I took mom & 3 kittens last October (that was her 2nd lot born in my car last year) & now Pinkie & 2 kittens last week to Paphiakos. They assured me that if you take the mom & kittens in they would wait till the kittens were weaned fully then take them to the sanctury to be released there after spaying the mom. I have to believe this is what they do!!!!
When I spoke to them on Thurs they said they now have the government funding back to get any ferrels spayed & if you want them back as "outdoor" cats & you just make a donation.
There may be an animal sanctury somewhere nearer to you as I live in Pafos not too sure whats down in Pissouri. There are about 6 ferrels around my flat & I have a cat myself so its so hard letting the kittens go but as they can produce twice a year its the best thing. I just wish they would have all the ferrels spayed then they would live longer & do the job they are here for to keep all the vermin etc down.

Good luck in your decision

I know it’s slightly ‘off topic’, I haven’t seen your car and I don’t want to annoy the fairies or in any way, BUT I have got to ask…how are they getting in your car :?:
Are you leaving a spare key in a convenient place, being carjacked at the traffic lights or just leaving a door or window open hoping it will get nicked? (it’s pink after all)

Hi Blackbird & extended family!

No, it isn't normal for the kittens to have diarrhoea so they do need checking out as they can go downhill very rapidly.
If you want to bring them into Paphiakos the kittens will be kept with their Mum until they are weaned.
I will be in the clinic on Wednesday afternoon so if you come in then please ask for me. We are open until 7pm.

Hi Sue,

Been at work all day today. Left Mummy with plenty of food, water and best quilt cover and duvet for her and kittens to hide under. She will make someone a fabulous pet, she is so pretty and friendly.

There doesn`t seem to be any more diarrhoea - thank goodness.

I`m at work for most of Wednesday but will let you know if I can manage to get there....otherwise I`ll just have to look after them for another week :celeb2

Thank you for your reply

Hi again :)

I`ve just seen a flea on Mummy. Would it be safe to put Frontline Tick and Flea on her ?

Kittens doing well. 2 days old now. Put litter tray in bedroom and Mummy using it. She hates leaving them even for a few seconds while she eats.

Thank you so much for your help, all common sense I had disappeared when the kittens arrived :doh

:greetings

Sorry to be so late getting back to you but I have been in bed today with a migraine.

I am so pleased to hear that Mum and kittens are doing well and the diarrhoea has cleared up. It sounds as though you and Mummy are doing a good job between you. :)
NO, don't use Frontline on a nursing Mum as the kittens could absorb the Fipronil! It would be safer to contact a Vet for advice before treating Mum with anything.
By the way you can take Mum and kittens into the clinic any day before 7pm including weekends.

Good morning :D

Day 3 and all well here.

I have been combing through Mummy`s fur and have found another flea but nothing else. She`s extremely happy with the attention. Kittens are fine and I can see them getting stronger by the day.

Thank you for the advice about the tick and flea stuff.

I know the longer I keep them, the harder it will be to let them go - but at least I`m trying to give them the best start.

Thank you again for your support

Hi Blackbird, (what is your name?)

Lovely to hear the good news regarding your new family.
I will ask the Vet tomorrow what you can use to treat fleas on a nursing Mum and I will get back to you tomorrow evening.
Keep up the good work,

Hi Sue :D :D :D

Kittens fine
Mummy fine

Mummy went out this morning for about 2 minutes (she is using the litter tray during the night) so I took the opportunity to change their quilt cover.

One thing this has brought to my attention - how spoilt and fussy my own 3 cats are ! All the food they left in their bowls I used to put out for Mummy. Nothing wrong with it - just obviously they didn`t particularly fancy that flavour for breakfast

Kindest regards
Tracey

Post subject:  Re: 4 surprises !!

Well done you for looking after them.
Please try to keep them until weaned then try to re home them yourself
Please try your hardest not to take them to the shelter mentioned above.

To those that say they can't have a cat because of owning a dog:
I have a Parsons Russell "Ozzie" (bred for pest control) that will go after anything that moves.
I now have 5 cats All of which will lay next to "Ozzie" and he won't bat an eyelid.
2 of my cats try to come for a walk with me when I take the dogs now.
I'm sure one has an identity crisis and thinks she is a dog! Even eats dog food out of the dogs bowls.
Dogs will get used to cats and vice versa.
It's actually harder getting cats to accept another cat than it is a dog.

Hi everybody :D

Everything going very well with Mummy and family. She is going out a couple of times a day (I presume to go to the toilet) (I hope she`s not meeting Daddy cat on the sly  ) and is eating plenty. Kittens are very well and are starting to push each other around a bit. They`ll be a week old tomorrow.

I leapt out of bed this morning at 5am when Mummy started bashing at her bedroom door to be let out to go to the loo. No wonder she came to us - maybe she knew we`d be a soft touch !!

Thank you for your interest everybody. I`ll take more photos of Kitties tomorrow and post them.

Hi Shirls :D

I know the kittens have to go - but I think I`ll be keeping Mummy. She is such a lovely natured cat. It will be hard to let them go, but I just can`t keep them. I`ve been spreading the word that I have them, and hopefully I might find them homes, but if not, they will have to go to the cats home. Surely it must be easier to get homes for kittens than it is for fully grown cats like Mummy?

Post subject:  Re: 4 surprises !!

The problem is theres so many of them that need homes the advantage you have is that the white ones may be easy to find homes for, pure white cats are few & far between. Ive been faced with your decision a lot when the ferrels have kittens. I have a cat & can afford to keep her & look after her, It would be so easy to take more in but just cant. Yours being "home" reared may end up making lovely pets sounds like he Moms set up now anyway

Hi again Shirl,

I would love to know which are the most and least popular colours of cats. So, if there was a kitten of every colour which would go first ? And last ?

I`m off to search the internet to see if I can answer my own question

That`s fabulous !! When the kittens are a bit older, I`m going to get a friend to have a look to see if they are girls or boys - which would you prefer ?

I`ll keep in touch - if the temperament of the Mummy is anything to go by, the kittens are going to be little smashers !

Two down, two to go.

Mummy full of tuna and kittens asleep. Now she`s got used to the litter tray, she prefers to use that than to leave the kittens.

Have a lovely Easter weekend everybody.

Hi all :greetings

I have been so busy that I haven`t had a minute to post more photos.

Kitties are 3 weeks old now and are doing very well. They are starting to climb about and I`ve had to move their quilt onto the floor so they don`t fall off the edge of the bed. (I`ve made sure there are no draughts) Mummy is venturing out more now, she will leave them for half an hour now but always scoots back after that.

In the next week or so, I will be in touch with the two people who were interested in giving a kitten a home.

Until then......here are more photos. I`m off to have a gawp at the kitties bits to try and work out if they are girls or boys

Yes, they are lovely - and they are starting to get more active by the day. The little ginger one leads the way in anything that`s going on - if there`s trouble afoot, that one will be in the middle of it.

I tried to sex the kittens but they are sooooo squirmy I couldn`t get a good look. I`ll have to wait till they are sleepy and then have a peek

Hi all :greetings

Kittens are 5 weeks old today and are just fab :heart Their personalities are so different.

They have started eating a little bit of kitten food but still love to cuddle up to Mummy for some milk. They are so active and are running riot all over the place. The bathroom seems to be their favourite place at the min.

One kitten definately has a home to go to.
Lizzie - are you still interested in having a kitten ?

I`m off to change their bedding and wash the floor (again !!) while they are in the bathroom :D

Have a great weekend everyone

Better late than never but I always meant to come on here and update all you lovely people who helped me cope with our 4 surprises.

All kittens went to new homes thanks to PP. Two white kittens now live together near us and one white and the lovely ginger boy went together to their new home and last I heard were doing very well.

A happy ending.

Mammy (now named Bella) was speyed and now lives a lovely life with us. She is a fabulous pet and I hope her kittens are as lovely natured and adorable as she has turned out to be.

Thanks again to all who helped me, Bella and my 4 surprises.
