Post subject: | Buying over the counter or prescriptions, I'm confused?! |
Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me, I am looking to get the contraceptive pill at the chemist but wasn't sure if you could buy over the counter or have to get a prescription? I have been taking them for the past 7 years but I have recently ran out. I am not a full time resident here been here for 6 months and leaving at end of November to keep traveling. Can someone inform me as to the correct way, or easiest way and prices to get them?! Thanks for your time |

Take your health card to the General Hospital about 7am, pay €2 to see one of the GPs and ask for a prescription. Take one of your packets of pills with you as they may be called something different over here. Lesley |

You cannot buy contraceptives over the counter in Cyprus. You need a doctor's prescription so the options are to pay to see a GP privately (cost can be anywhere between 20 EUR to 50 EUR) and they should be able to give you a prescription for 6 months. If you have to see a Gynaecologist then be prepared to pay quite a bit more privately. The alternative is as has been suggested and that's to use the free service with a pink medical card, which will allow you to use the doctors at the hospital clinics and you will pay only 2 EUR for the issue of a prescription no matter how many medicines you are prescribed. You can only get the medical card on proof of social insurance contributions, proof of income (as it's based on your earnings whether you get the pink for free or yellow (I think) for a contribution) and your yellow residence slip. |

Neil, I still don't think it's possible in the north either. They are clamping down on the issue of medication especially one such as this. |

You can still buy them in the north but my wife tells me they are so dear that you pay less paying thedoc 50euro for a script here plus cos they are so dear you run the risk of counterfeit. |

You can access the General with your UK/EU health card - you don't always need a Cypriot medical card. Lesley |

Hi, Thanks for your help on this one, I do not have a UK medical card or a Cypriot one I am afraid! I guess I shall try a few places then if not then I guess I am going to have to leave it. Seems quite a taboo over here still though talking about it, and the chemist in the Peyia Village was not helpful, he was quite rude and shunned be off! Charming! Oh well. Thanks for all your help! |

Hi You can download an excel list of medications available in Cyprus from here: http://www.moh.gov.cy/moh/phs/phs.nsf/d ... endocument It may be worth checking to see if the tablets you have are on the list. If it is, then there shouldn't be any reason why you cannot get a private prescription from a GP. |

Hi even if you go to the general and pay €2.00 to see the Gyne there (the man I saw was very rude and against giving the pill to ladies who had not had children at my age, i'm 36 and he thought it was about time I was having children any way, when he finally gave me the perscription I still had to go to an outside chemist to get the pills as they do not give them to you at the pharmacy in the hospital and you have to pay for the pills extra at about €7.00 per month. You are better off going to a private GP paying the fee and getting the perscripton written out for you. |
