I have a good idea that should save 1,000's off litres of water a day, not just in Cyprus but all over the world. I can not understand why this has not been done before. If all big towns like Paphos used pump sea water for toilet flushing, and cleaning pools area, ect ect this would save so much fresh water. I know it would cost £1.000's to do this but in the long run could it work???.

There so much water all around you, that could be used trillions ltr of water, for flushing your toilet and cleaning your patio. using sea water has salt so it would also kill germs on you patio,pool area.

I think it could work what do you think ??????????

Good idea Mark, only problem would be money, the cost of pumping it inland, the cost of repairing equipment eroded by the salt in the water, the cost of cleaning the stains left over by the salt once it dry's, the cost of damage caused as sea water is concrete's/metal's worse enemy

So great ides in principle but the costs outweight the idea 10 fold I think

Would have been a great idea to introduce BEFORE anything had been built as retrospective fitting will be prohibitive same as domestic grey water and rain retention systems.

Ideal world supply for me would be two metered water supplies at different cost per cu.m "drinking" and "irrigation". drinking for sinks & cleaning/eating, non-potable for garden/pool/toilets.

It would be a big concern if, like beach sand, builders started using sea water for building............concrete cancer because of the cross reaction of salt and steel.

Well I have a 1 litre bottle filled with water in my toilet citron, so every flush i save a litre off water. I would say each household at least flushes there toilet 10 times a day if not more. So if there is 1 million toilets in Cyprus that a saving off 10 millon litre off water each and every day.

Just to make things clear? my toilet still flushes very well without the extra 1 litre off water.

You should try to get that started in the UK as well, as you'l have around 50+ million toilets over there, so imagine how much water you'd save in that case

As for building using sea water, it already goes on, and for that reason alone, I wouldn't buy a house near the coast, anywhere in Cyprus

We had a water sump in the PSD when I worked at Akrotiri, which contained 50,000 ltrs of water incase of a fire. When we had the 6.5 earthquake in Aug 99, we had to check all the metal fuel tanks for leaks but found none, until we checked the concrete water sump, which had a crack in it, if it hadn't had a fibreglass lining, all 50,000 ltrs of water would have crashed out & straight into the office where me & the other lads where sitting during the quake

Once we found the crack, we got the royal engineers out to inspect it & they pulled away all the loose concrete to find the metal strengthening inside had corroded due to it being built with concrete made with sea water

So if you have a seaside property or intend buying one close to the sea, get the structure checked out

Too late pete you can buy the water bags that you put in cisterns to reduce water usage.Dam means i ll have to stay in uk bit longer.
