Hi guys

Can anyone recommend a builder that can put up a partition wall and also maybe a gate for us, hate just picking a name out of a hat much rather someone was recommended to us.

Isn't a recommendation by someone you don't know in a web forum much the same as picking names out of a hat?

Not really KG, as its taking the knowledge of someone else who's used them before, at least you'll have someone to blame if it all goes pear shaped

If picked out of a magazine or paper, you've only got yourself to blame

Unless you know the person replying, you have no way of judging the value of the recommendation, or whether that person has a particular axe to grind with that recommendation. While there is nothing wrong with recommending tradesmen who have done a good job, the recommendations should be treated with caution.

I would much rather go with someon recommended to me cos you could always go and look at the work as well.

I'm sure no one here would recommend someone if they wasn't too sure.

That is what a recommendation is, it's advice, an endorsement, vouching for etc etc

With recommendations from people who I actually know and trust, or from seeing quality work done and investigating who has done it.

KG, if i picked someone from one of the various magazines avail in paphos, how would i know if i was the first job he/she had ever done? would i know if they turn up on time? complete a job? stick to the quote? NO i would not, at least by asking people here if they can recommend someone, then surely they would not recommend them if any of the above points applied?

I do not know of anyone else here in Paphos who has used a builder before otherwise i would have asked them, i believe in doing some sort of research before handing over my hard earned money to any tom, dick or harry, hence my post.

Hi All

Age old problem. I'll share my experiences.

Without any recommendation (or even asking for one !!) I chose someone to do some work and I based my decision on the work he did in understanding my drawings, agreeing what I wanted and how he planned to do it - the whole quotation process if you like. I checked out the price with another quote but that guy did not give me any sense of confidence. The first guy said pay at the end of the job, which I thought was right. He did a great job. Very happy. Paid at the end of the job.

A few months later I asked him to do another job for me. All I checked was that the quote was in line with others because he had a good track record with me.

Nightmare. How things had changed in such a short timeframe. I had to pay for materials as they were delivered, materials not even ordered to meet wip, workers came and mostly went and at the end certain agreed work had not been done with him arguing that he wanted more money to finish. Needless to say I did not pay more and I had no choice but to compromise. What was I going to do? Take him to court? Pointless.

So the point is that had I recommended him then someone else would have been really fed up with me. You just can't tell can you?

So I don't make positive recommendations any more but i certainly would drop in a negative if anyone asked !!

The thing is, if a builder/hairdresser/plumber etc does a good job and get recommended on a forum, then turns in some defective work, they also run the risk of that being passed on, too. Maybe not openly, but certainly by pm.

I am sure you will be fine, Amanda. I think asking for recommendations is the way to go, too.

That is what I intend to do Verity, if I ever see or hear of that name again............that is if he stays in business !!

I am sure that Amanda will be OK provided she looks out for any warning signs..........like the one I mentioned.
