Bought some light bulbs today and was about to chuck the dead one out in the new box and my wife noticed the 'dont bin' symbol on the box, so in a further effort to save the world i turned on my pc and peripherals to post this question. I hope that the longer i have edited this post that i haven't used too much carbon up !

:smilielol

Where can i dispose of items that are marked on the global packaging as recyclable but don't fit inside the categories of the local recycle scheme ?

I don't think Cyprus is serious about re-cycling- yet. There are no bins in our village yet we have 2 banks & 3 mini-markets all busy - so hardly a dead village. I see the bins in Trimithousa and hardly anyone using them.

So I guess as usual it going to take a few million fine (that we pay for) from the EU to get the District Office to get its act together.

I can't recall seeing any recycling facilities around Paphos, certainly not for "specialised" items like light bulbs.

Is there even anywhere we can recycle things like paper and bottles over here?

Not much help to the original question - They do have special collection point for recycling of batteries in the big supermarkets.

BigDutch,

As no-one seems to want to answer your question -

Polemi Dave makes a small speech and then a small Cyprus bash
Captain F seems to walk around with his eyes shut and doesn't read the posts about recycling facilities
Columbia agrees to be not much help

I will answer: Nowhere. Put them in the bin. Do not feel guilty. If everyone in Cyprus put a bulb in a bin it will not have the slightest effect on the planet.

Actually out of all the recycle something like a light bulb is important to if you can as it contains dangerous materials in them such as mercury. The manufactures have tried greatly to reduce these materials but can't limit them from their products. They even had to get special permission when the WEEE directive was brought it to be able to carry on producing light bulbs.

Here's the Cyprus recycling website, if you have got it. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find much on light bulbs.

I think the mercury problem only applies to fluorescents and not incandescent light bulbs.

CF, surely you jest?. There are loads of bins, you actually cannot miss them, although........
Also, Paphiakos always welcome old newspapers as they use for bedding.
As to the original qustion, having checked recycling sites out, nobody seems to have any answer other than chuck em in your regular rubbish bag. Sorry can't be more help!.

I think CF was commenting on the fact of what happens to the rubbish after it goes in the recycling bins? Does any one know of a recycling plant in Cyprus? And if Cyprus doesn't have recycling plants, it can't be that environmentally friendly to recycle with the amount of energy it will take to ship the rubbish somewhere.

Incandescent light bulbs do have some mercury in them, a very small amount, a lot less. It's probably only really going to be a issue if you get a lot of the bulbs together.

Found an interesting UK site about recycling of lamps.

Have you got a reference where I can find out more about this as every bit or research I've done indicates that ordinary incandescent filament bulbs have no mercury? I don't recall seeing any warning or other labelling on their packaging either. I'm interested to know what the mercury does in the bulb.

Oops! I think I miss read something. They still got lead in them, so nasty stuff anyway. And all the new energy saving bulbs do have mercury.

No. I think you have that wrong too. When you read about lead wires they mean platinum lead-in wires!

Sounds nasty to me.

You're right but the lead is only referred to with regard to disposal. There is no manufacturing reference to lead. I can only assume it is the lead in the solder used in the bulbs that is the problem. That is all I was interested in!
