Hi,

We are moving to Cyprus next year and will be renting a property for at least 12 months. As we would be renting out our house in the UK our furniture would need to go into storage or be shipped out to Cyprus.

Im sure loads of you may of had this problem. I've looked in storage prices and they seem quite expensive and if we end up staying in Cyprus we'll end up shipping our furniture out anyway.

Did/would anyone recommend shipping their furniture out and how much would it cost (approx)

Thanks

Personal choice really. I originally came out 10 years ago and shipped all my furniture out but on buying a place the furniture wasn't right so I sold it all at a huge loss! Furniture is more expensive here but shipping can also be expensive.
You can store furniture here too if you want to.

You may find it more comfortable to rent here with your own furniture that you are familiar with. Then again you may not mind someone elses furniture. My guess is you would prefer your own or you wouldn't want to ship it all out.
It really is horses for courses.
Take a look at the rental property on our website and see how it is furnished before you decide. Some is furnished and some not. Then you may get a better idea. If you need any help in renting then contact us and we will see what is available when you are ready.

Good luck in your decision

Tiggy

Hello

We moved out to Cyprus last year and had a similar dilemma.
When we first moved here we went into furnished rental accommodation.
The owners of the villa showed us around before we decided to rent and everything looked great.
However, it was not until we moved in and started looking around that we discovered that the villa had been furnished using a rental package - it looked very nice, but both the beds and the 3-piece suite were very uncomfortable, ok for a 2 week holiday but not for a longterm rent.
We shipped out our belongings and some furniture last summer in a 20foot container, which cost about 2000 pounds.
We are now living in an unfurnished villa, filled with some of our original furniture but mostly with new furniture bought here on the island, it doesn't have to cost a fortune, especially if you do not mind a few Ikea items.
We would never rent furnished again, it doesn't feel like home and you are always conscious of any accidental damage that may happen to someone else's property.
Lastly, there is a very wide choice of unfurnished property on the market, which of course is much cheaper than furnished and you are more likely to be able to keep a pet if that is your preference.

I know of one couple who moved back because they could not make their rental feel like home. Rentals can be either damp or cold in the winter and too hot in summer.

Cypriot furniture and particularly rental stuff can be a bit basic and you miss all your own bits. Shipping to Cyprus £3~4K for a 20ft container - storage in UK, no idea but not cheap.

Fact is lots of people don't settle down here and go back - so its a real no right answer question. However there are lots and lots of rentals everywhere and Cypriots ask me every hay if I know of a nice English family who want a villa.

Good luck

Ps See "want to be a Hill Billy" thread by Pete. Never a dull day if you rent up here. Its not true about the wild goings on up here every night - honest its weekends only! :celebrate

Pps While typing this another thread has come in from Woffie that rather confirms the point.

I came out nearly 4 years ago & rented furnished as I only bought a small proportion of my furniture ( house & garden) with me & either gave the rest away or sold it for a fraction of the original cost. I paid £60 per cubic metre to ship which was a great price & only took 13 days. On hindsight I wish I had bought most of my furniture with me,but in the 4 years I have been here now rent totally unfurnished ( moved 4 times now NOT moving again either!!) , except for white goods, and have manage to collect all the furniture for a 3 bed flat.
So I think its down to your choice If you intend to stay here, Im NEVER goin back, and you think your furniture may be good enough to last until you settle somewhere and see what is around may be an Idea to bring it. Or store it here or in UK while you rent furnished for a short while then have a look for an unfurnished property.
Difficult decision think sometimes I made the right one, then another wished Id bought all my "stuff" with me, then again Im a gemini!!!!
Good Luck

If you do rent furnished make sure that the inventory is accurate, we rented furnished and trusted the 'British' house agent, we didn't get an inventory so we were shocked when we found several items already very much worse for wear including (according to the owner) a brand new 'Bed Setee' had gone walkabout.
Luckily our Ex-pat neighbours knew the owner and had seen the agents people take the said setee away.
Check every little scratch/bump as these will be used to try and keep hold of the deposit.
Finaly don't take anyones word for anything, get it all down in writing and don't hand over a penny until anything promised to be done before you move has been done.
Best of Luck.

Is it me or have I been lucky!! I have rented 3 other properties here both from UK & Cypriots and have never had a problem with getting my deposit back in full from them or them checking anything that was in the flats when I moved out. I have never had an Inventory of what was in the properties. I think Its how you are with them a lot of the time

I think you've been very very Lucky, stories abound on these forums regarding problems of none returned deposits.
Regarding inventories they are for the benefit of both the tennant and landlord, but, if the landlord is holding the deposit he also holds all the aces, that is why the general advice is not to pay the final months rent as very few people manage to retrieve their deposits on vacating the property..
