hi all

I wonder if you can help us

we are looking to come and live in Cyprus from end of Oct until end of April to miss our UK freeziing cold weather...due to health issues and breathing issues

can anyone help us here

what is the winter weather like?

will it be cold?

if so how cold?

as how cold the winter months are is a very bid issue to us with the health concerns that edd has ........as cold air makes him very ill

also how much rain can we expect for the winter months?

sorry for all of the questions...but we have booked to come out and then my sister was over visiting someone in paphos last week and they have said that the winter weather can get very very cold.and so we are now not sure what we should do

It all depends on where you will be. Sea level, in the hills etc.

As to rain, one thing you don't get here is drizzle. It is either proper rain or no rain. It doesn't rain all day or anything like that, but do realise that all the year's drinking water has to fall during the winter, so we can get quite a bit.

it will depend on how long someone has lived out here, as to the answers you will get..


I have been here years , and turned into a right wimp others will tell you diffirent ..
What I can assure is , it will be no where as cold as it is in the UK ..
If it is going to get cold , its only at night , after the sun goes down , it can get a bit fresh ..
but forget the big boots and duffle coats , it never gets that cold ...

Als as said before , the further up hill you are , the colder it is ...

We moved out here 8 January 2009 and lived in Kato Paphos (sea level).
Yes, we had some rain, but the daytime temperature was what you would expect during a spring day in the uk.
However, when the sun goes down the temperature can drop very quickly and it does get cold.
If you intend to stay in 'holiday accommodation', as we did, you will find that they are equipped for the summer heat, not the winter cold and are very expensive to try and keep warm.
If you are intending to live in a villa/appartment that is used all year, you may find that with rugs, throws and adequate heating the evenings are warm enough and it won't cost you a forture to heat and it will be a much better experience than trying to guess what the uk winter will have to offer in 2010/11.

we are looking to rent in Peyia.... I think the property is at the lower end of Peyia but still looks mountanious

as we can see goat herds eating in the mountains from our balconey

we have chosen a small 1 bedroomed apartment...some of the apartments around the 1 that we have chosen are lived in all year round

we also chose an apartment that has another one each side...........and above .....so that we only have the front and back as outside walls

it has rugs...........dual air-con that turns into heating....and oil-filled radiators for colder days....I have also asked for a winter duvet to be in the apartment, for the cooler nights.is all of that going to be adequate enough for a cyprus winter?

we did though think that the weathger would have been more like our cool summers than a cold spring day...and that is now worrying me..........as my husbands lungs won't take the colder weather

the only thing that i can think of that is also diferent to the uk and please correct me if I am wrong

is that cyprus in the winter does get a lot more sunshine than we do here in the uk

out of our 6 month booking ...........how many months of the WORST weather are we looking at?

Or are we talking about the colder weather more in days and a few weeks as oposed to months and months?

Another thing you should consider. House’s here are build for the summer. In the winter, unless you have the right sort of heating the house can feel very cool indeed

Its usually warmer to sit outside in the winter (during the day) than it is to be inside.........

Houses are cold due to no insulation, definitely need central heating and lots of rugs.......

Hi Maggie
You might consider an electric blanket. Cyprus has high humidity causing moisture to be aborbed by soft furnishings and beds. Once it gets cold beds feel cold and damp, and stay like that all Winter! We do removals and shipping and often suggest to Clients that they take electric blankets- especially for new-build or properties not lived in all year round.

or should we ask family to send one out from the uk?

at the moment

the nights are soo hot.............need doors open and fan on all night

the thought of an electric blanket is enough to make me feel ill

but doubtless this good spell will oin time change

we where thinking of putting one of the fleece blankets on the bed underneath the flannelette sheets for winter months.....will that not be ok?

as this works at home in - 20%.........so was thinking it could work here?

we where going to put the aircon onto dehumidifyer mode if things got damp

OMG

we are sat out sunbathing all day long

edd even went for a dip in the pool

it is so hot at night times that we have got the doors open and the over head fan on.to try and keep us cool.sleeping under a sheet only as boiling hot

have to sit watching tele at night times with the fan on ...to try and keep cool

think we are going to be ok for winter colder months.......if you are all feeling the "chill" now..............as even when snowing at home we like all the windows open all day and night.........for fresh air

we have though got a back up 13.5 tog rated quilt and jumpers ...jog pants etc etc for the colder nights when they arrive

for now it's great to be experiencing for us a summer that we didn't have at home this year

I'd have never coped in the really hot weather you all had in august

noticed that xmas is starting to arrive in the shops....although looking at the price of chocs and mince pies etc etc...............we won't be having any

oh well do the old waste line good if nothing else

hopefully see you at the market this sunday

we will be out hunting for a scrabble set.........to while the hours away
