Please can someone enlighten me about using Paypal here.

I haven't used my account since I've lived here, but I want to now. So I went in and tried to amend my profile but it doesn't let you amend to another address outside the UK, nor will it let me delete my old UK telephone number.

Tried to call the helpline but it was hopeless, completely automated with seemingly no facility to speak to a real person.

At last I got a message on screen saying if you live outside the UK you must set up a Paypal account in your new country of residence.

I don't specially want to to do that and would prefer to fund it from a UK bank account.

Has anyone else got this sorted, please?

Fiona

Why not just set up an account in cyprus addy. I can not see what diffrence it would make just put funds in to your cyprus account for Pay Pal. See women make a mountain out of a mole hill

The address has to be for the country of the bank account.
otherwise money laundering would be easy for those who wish to ..
I had to send them copies of my electric bill , as I was getting
what they call , large amounts in payments .. 1000 euros WOW .

Fiona i just looked into it for you. Sorry to say Neil is right. You can only set up a account in the country you live in.

Well not entirely true, you can only set up a Paypal account in the country you have a bank account in is more precise :D

So you could live in Cyprus & still have a UK bank account & address, so still have a UK Paypal account too :D

If you also have a Cyprus address & bank account, you could set up a paypal account here & as you can transfer funds to any emal address worldwide, you could in fact transfer money from your Cypriots account to your UK account

Slightly OT sorry.

This is a free way of sending money from one country to another.
You set up one paypal account in UK and another in Cyprus each linked to bank accounts in the respective countries.
This then enables you to transfer money between the two countries. You only have to pay fees when you remove the money from your paypal account to your bank account, so if you keep it in the paypal account to pay bills with you never pay transfer fees.
This is a tip recommended by one of the money saving sites, can't remember which one, probably money supermarket or similar.

Regards
Brian.

Neat idea Brian. I will have to remember that one. I had thought of just closing the UK one, but maybe I will keep in going as we will still have a UK bank account as well.

Hi Mark, you don't have to close one to open another, you can have more than 1 Paypal account, as long as you have an address, bank account & email addresses in the counrty to which it is connected too, so Fiona doesn't need to close her UK Paypal account to open a Cypriot Account, as long as she has a UK address & bank details still :D

You can also have upto 8 email address on your Paypal account :D

This makes it easier if you want to transwer money between your accounts

PayPal appears to be staffed by idiots. Trying to find the one member of staff who knows what he/she is talking about is impossible, as is re-connecting with that person should you find them. :?

When I moved here a few years back (despite having a UK bank account and a UK credit card) I was unable to use my PayPal account, which was never properly resolved despite many letters, e-mails and telephone calls, and when I opened a new Cyprus account (using my local debit card with a Cyprus billing address), it wouldn't accept payments, which was a pain as receiving payments was more important than making them. Thankfully since EU membership that obstacle has been removed.

I have since added a UK credit card and have that set as my primary card.

I have just checked my profile and I don't appear to have any bank accounts associated with the account - only the cards.

I tend to leave receipts in the PayPal account and use them when I buy stuff on line.

Soooooo -

I keep my UK Paypal account open and open one in Cyprus as well.

I assume I just use another e-mail address for the Cyprus account?

And is it OK to leave my old address and telephone number on the UK account (as I seem to be unable to delete it)? Even though neither are now obviously valid.

Good tip about the switching Brian, thanks.

Thank you all for your helpful replies.

Fiona

Hi Fiona,

Just start afresh & open a new Cyprus Papypal account, make sure your change the country from UK to Cyprus because once you set it up, it can not be cancelled

Keep your UK one for transfering money back & forth if you like.

You can use upto 8 email address on your account, even if they're on both accounts.

You can attach you bank details if you like but as KG stated, you can know put a UK C/C on your Cypriot Paypal if you chose too :D

Well, just to throw something else in the melting pot! When I moved here in Octoebr 2006 I changed the address on my Paypal account to my Cyprus address, and use a Nationwide account to pay! The only problem I have is that as I don't have a credit card everything I pay for is done by e-cheque and that is a real pain in the arm-pit. Not had any problems to date, and in fact got two parcels yesterday!

I think I'm losing the will to live :(

Tried to set up Cyprus paypal account, but system won't accept it as I don't have a home telephone number.

Jean, please can you tell me how you managed to change your UK account to your Cyprus address, cos that's all I want to do! Unless I am being completely dumb it seems to require only a UK address.

Thanks
Fiona

Hi Jean,

Did you changethe country of origin on your account to Cyprus, as I was able to when we moved out here & after I spoke to Paypal directly, they told me it wasn't possible, thats why I had to set up a Cyprus Account with them instead

Fiona,

Don't you have a Cypriot phone number at all, either mobile or home that you can use :? Maybe someone you know will let you use there number, its not as if they ever call you, just make one up

Well, it's a while since I did it, but I've just had a look now. I think I went in via "Edit Profile" then changed address and changed bank account details. I know it took a while for the bank account details to update, cos I was waiting to pay for an item on ebay  . I did retain my old email address and password, so they still remain the same. Since then, no problems apart from the e-cheque thingy but will get that sorted one day. I'll deposit some money in the Paypal account so that should sort it out.

Good luck
