The Government is evicting more than 600 prison officers from their homes so they can move in convicted criminals to ease the jail overcrowding crisis.
The news comes as jails were declared absolutely full for the first time ever, with the number of inmates in England and Wales totalling 82,068 – almost 100 above the official safety limit.

The Ministry of Justice has told the warders to leave their State-owned properties by May 1 so they can be used to home burglars, thugs and drug dealers released on electronic tags – raising fears over public safety.

More than 100 of the homes, ranging from one-bedroom flats to large townhouses, are in prime sites across London, where prison officers, who have been paying heavily subsidised rent, claim they cannot afford to buy houses.

The offenders include prisoners without stable home addresses whom the Government would like to release on tags but fears may abscond. Also included are those on remand awaiting trial or sentence.

Tony Mottram, 47, his wife Silvia, their two children and a foster son are facing eviction from their four-bedroom house owned by the Prison Service next to Wandsworth jail in South London. He said: "Prison officers earn a pittance and I cannot afford to buy a home in London."

Maybe the government should make one of these small island into a prison & move all 86,000 inmates there to live alone, just put up a 20ft wall with glass on top, pressure mines all around the outer land, razor wire fences & automated gun turrets covering every angle :D

Saying that tho', Frank & people like him who depend on criminals for a job, wouldn't have any work, so maybe it should just be hardened criminal & Frank can look after the soft one's

Madness. Sadly nothing that the UK government does comes as a great surprise any more.

How could you possibly be over-reacting when hard working people are being turfed out of their homes to accommodate criminals simply because the government cannot provide sufficient space in UK prisons. Perhaps we should just get a few more Judges to go lenient on offenders so as not to overcrowd the prisons any more

The only swear word in Greek I know (malakas) is insufficient to describe this unbelievably bizarre course of events. :rant

How pathetic! they should make the criminals work for their keep then we wouldn't have so many( if prison was more of a deterent and less of a holiday camp it would help!) Why should prison officers have to give up their homes for this scum. Val

Frank they should never have thought of it in the first place, let alone have second thoughts.
