Neil

Is this the one where people can sample one (or more) of your world famous bacon butties served in your comfortable comer café or order one of your ‘soon to be’ world famous fresh spit roast whole chickens.

Well I'll certainly be there. It sounds like it will be the event of the year. Neil, is that the market that has gluten-free products, books at only 1 euro, original DVDs at only 2 euros, and a range of inexpensive trinket boxes etc?

Dave, that was code for something else. I know what Neil is like, but as I told him, I am not wearing THAT dress in public! As for anything resembling cleaning, forget it!

Taken From Todays Cyprus Mail
By Bejay Browne Published on October 7, 2011

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/cyprus/new-market-opening-paphos/20111007

A NEW market in Paphos will be officially opened by the mayor this weekend.

The indoor- outdoor market is housed in the old Carob Mill in Kato Paphos and was the idea of Christakis Philippou.

Along with a team of helpers, he has transformed the old mill into what he refers to as ‘a great market experience.’

Although Philipou was born in Cyprus, he moved to the UK over 30 years ago and says he drew inspiration from the bustling markets there.

He told the Cyprus Mail: “I was involved in markets in the UK for many years before moving to Greece and then finally coming home.”

“I used to go to bazarakis and I thought it would be a good opportunity to make a market like this in Paphos. I chose the old mill because it’s in the centre of Paphos and it is a large space,” he added.

Philippou said that car boot sellers can offer their wares in the outside parking area, while more than 40 stalls offering services and products ranging from massages, clothes alterations and key cutting- to handicrafts, traditional Cypriot fare and household items, will operate inside.

“There is a great mixture of people and cultures in the market and we offer something for everyone,” he said.

The old Carob Mill is close to E& S supermarket and has a history stretching back for decades. Formerly famous for the production of sugar made from carobs, the building is a well known landmark in Paphos.

One of the stallholders said, “It has been quite a transformation and it’s very exciting for us and each stall is so different from the next. This market will also help to give a bit of life back to Paphos and it’s a great place for people to visit and have a wander around.”

In addition to the indoor market, Philippou said that car boot sellers were welcome to set up at the market on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 8am. And as a special concession, the first two weeks were free of charge.

There is also a café in the market which serves hot and cold refreshments, along with a covered outside seating area. Toilet facilities are also provided.

Stallholders say the atmosphere at the market is friendly with people of all nationalities working together as a team to make it a ‘fun and friendly experience.’

Future plans are already underway to expand the market to incorporate a regular furniture and antique auction.

Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas, will open the market tomorrow at 11am and it will also receive a blessing from the local priest.

The market is open six days a week, Tuesday–Thursday 9am to 6.30pm, Friday 9am – 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 9am – 3pm.
