Hi, don't like talking about work at the best of times but I work as part of a team and the bulk of my job means I'm parked at a monitor all day.
We 've been greatly overworked lately and for the past 2 years I've been demanding more recruits to no avail. My workload has been getting bigger and more complex by the day and this morning I was finding it hard to cope and felt like I was losing control of my temper and the tasks I had to do.
Don't know whether I had a panic attack or what but I came out in a heavy sweat, started feeling dizzy and was short of breath. Anyway I needed to walk away from the damn place so did.Felt exhausted and came home and lay down. After a couple of hours felt okay. Strange that, so I'm chilling now on here.
Gary

You poor thing Gary, hope you are feeling better now.

I guess we have all done the stress at work bit. Its no good anyone telling you to take it easy either cos it just dont work.

Have you got a holiday planned, cos maybe you could try focusing on that.

Sorry I cant be of more help to you.

Hi Gary

Sorry you're experiencing such a bad time.

I know that when I've been totally overloaded with work that is unmanageable I've gone to the boss and told them that I can do it, but I can't to it to their deadline if they expect a quality result. If they are happy to accept less than a quality result, they don't really deserve you.

Sorry not to be able to give more useful help. :(

Gary, I feel your pain - it was too many days like that that eventually led to my escape a few years back :(

You sound like a man who could do with a cold beer and a long-term plan that involves early retirement to the sunshine! :D

Hi Gary

as CF said, been there and got the T shirt! I know it's not easy to tell your management, but you've got to approach the subject again - tell them that unless they get some more people, their staff are under so much pressure they're going to crack!

Take a couple of days to get yourself feeling better - don't make yourself ill over it - chill, relax, and get your breath back.

Gary - poor you

I sympathise as a similar thing happened to me a few years ago.
At the time there was just me and my boss as it was a new department but as time went on and our workload grew - the number of staff didn't. I was constantly being fobbed off with promises of help that never came. In the end I just cracked - I went home one night, started to cry and didn't stop for about 4 hours. My OH sent me straight to the docs the next morning and she signed me off with stress - not something I did lightly as I had not had any sick days for about 3 years. I couldn't even ring my boss to tell him what was wrong as I couldn't talk about it without breaking down so I put it all in an email to him. In the end my company managed the whole thing really well and I ended up returning to work after a month off. They took my situation very seriously and immediately recruited 2 new people to the team to help me. They also encouraged me to stay at home until I was fully ready to return and even let me do part time hours for my first week back. I was very lucky and I still work for the same boss now 5 years later.
Gary you should try to talk to someone at work about how you are feeling. Stress in the workplace is a huge problem in the UK and all employers should take it seriously. No job is worth making yourself ill over. Please try to talk to someone before your situation becomes worse or at the very least try to take some time out.

Take Care

Julie x

Your not on your own, i have worked till 9 tonight and it was another really bad day! month end deadlines and everyone demanding a piece of me. A few things went wrong because i took my eye of the ball, because i was trying to do too much at the same time, and no doubt i will be in trouble tomorrow!
time to do the euro millions!

I cried when i got in from work tonight, albeit briefly, and now i am hitting the hard stuff!

Work-related stress is the main reason we decided to bring our move date forward by at least a year, so I have the greatest sympathy and understanding for anyone who endures this. I am the last person to give advice about being forthright in approaching employers about this but for your own sanity and health you have to. I hope today is a better one so take the bull by the horns.

Know what you mean Gary, been there got the Tshirt. I was lucky in one way in that one of my bosses let me take work home with me, enabling me to finish the most important tasks first. The everyday things were given to a junior whilst I worked at home and I then checked this when I went back. Made life a lot easier as I was not being pestered by all and sundry at work and only my line managers had my phone number for contact. This was only made possible because one of my managers actually found me in tears in the workplace when she came in to my office for something with files and paper all over my desk not knowing which way to turn and since the whole division would have been affected if I had ended up on stress leave they had to find a solution quick.

Maybe you could suggest something like that (if you are able to take work home that is).

Wish you luck in whatever you decide to do and sorry can't help much more.

Thanks Julie and everyone for your concerns,
My boss rang me last night. I am not overworked. Fact. There are people who work harder than me. Fact. The unit is not understaffed. Fact. I have been very unpredictable lately. Fact.
He then asked if I would be in today, No. Fact.
Been to the Docs, told him, got some pills and a sick note.
I am not in a position to start my Cyprus adventure just yet for a number of reasons. I am close to the finishing line, just need to get there.
Thanks again to you all and seing as it is work and I want to forget about that just now I'll make this my last post on the subject.
Cheers All.

Hi Gary,

I, too, have had problems accessing the site so have only just read this post.

Your boss is out of touch with the situation and is totally out of order to try to put the blame on you rather than the workload. If you are acting out of sorts then there is a reason for it and you have identified that work is at least part of the cause. It is easy to tell yourself that you will do only what is necessary and not overload yourself, but when you are there everything seems to be necessary, and other people put the pressure on you too.

The symptoms you experienced are those of a panic attack. They can feel even stronger than that sometimes, so you are right to go to your GP and get help.

This is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign that today's materialistic and uncaring society is having an adverse affect on people.

It is no secret that I have suffered with depressive illness and I occasionally have a panic attack even now, in sunny Cyprus. I have learned how to manage them, but they are still unpleasant when they occur.

Take this time out and get yourself rested. Do you have an Occupational Health department where you work? They are the people who can support you with a return to work package.

Take care.

HI Gary,

Verity's comments about panic attacks are absolutely right. My OH Guy suffers will dreadful panic attacks and they scare me as well as him.

Take as much time off as the doctor will give you and do not be tempted to return to work sooner than he recommends. You need time out to sort your head out.

In my "all ties cut" thread you can read that I have decided not to carry on working for my company and this is largely down to the stress over the years. At some time you have to put yourself first. I understand that you are not in my fortunate position but try and come to some decision that is best for you.

I hope everything resolves itself well one way or another. We are all here to support you and offer any advice we can, however small it may be.
