We are just getting quotes for shipping, but wondered if anyone has experience of shipping IT equipment including studio voice equipment, amateur radio equipment?

Cost of furniture in Cyprus at present - is it worth bringing from UK? We have three bedroom bungalow (villa) to move to but has all white goods and fitted wardrobes and blinds.

We have a lot of stuff - personal - but I am trying to get both Eamon and
Emma to cull stuff!

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Michele

Hi We have a few moving companies in our business directory,
none of which I have had a bad report about..
I suggest that you get quotes from them all , as they can vary ..
please look here

Hi Michelle

If you are having a large container, then I would pack it as full as you can.

I gave a lot of stuff away before moving here, from fridges to plants etc. Since being here I have had to replace everything. So if you've got it and want it then bring it with you.

After all if you dont want it after you have arrived there are plenty of charity shops here.

My opinion and I realise others will disagree but we shipped all our stuff out from the UK at a huge cost. I really do wish I'd never bottered. Cull it, only bring the personal/sentimental/absoutely needed and start your new life afresh.... you can buy almost anything you need and its probably cheaper than the shipping !

Hi,

I would say pack everything you can into that container - incuding new towels and bedlinen and clothes - there are very few bargain type shops here like Matalan, Asda clothes and homewares etc.

I have terrible trouble buying my twelve year old son clothes here - there is so little choice.

It has cost me thousands to replace things I gave away like bookcases, lamps etc and if you've not got a job/pension to come to thats savings that evapourate!

Having said that I wouldn't go back - good luck.

Hi, a 20' container comes with two prices; to pack and load yourself plus unload yourself at the destination will cost around £2,000, you will have just 3 to 4 hours to load and unload otherwise the metre starts ticking.

To have the shippers pack and load will add around another £1,200 they will also uload and unpack at your destination, doing it this way you are also covered for damage in transit.

These are the figures that I have been given by several shipping companys one as recent as today.

Hi Michele - can't believe you are going to be here soon.

We took the opportunity to sort out all our junk and stuff that had accumulated over 30 years. We threw out so much paperwork, old cards etc, etc. But as far as furniture was concerned we brought it all with us. We bought new in the UK with our Cyprus life in mind, so it fits perfectly and looks good. We would not have brought our old green leather suite with us as it would have looked out of place here. So if your furniture will look equally at home in Cyprus as it does in the UK - bring it.

We went to Dunelm and bought bedding, shopped on a TV shopping channel and bought Egyptian cotton towels. As Nicky says, whilst you have the wider choice use it.

Looking forward to seeing you over here. Maybe I will turn up at the next BBQ.

Thanks for the great advice so far, shipping has risen tremendously as the prices are just going up as we speak, so we are going to think very carefully before shipping everything - however, I will need a lot of car boot sales to get rid of what is really 20 years worth of memorabilia!

Shipping costs now with insurance, and they now insist on packing to be insured are around £4,000 plus for a container and about £2,500 for a half container! We live next door to a remover and shipper, and we know from others they are very reasonable compared to others and have vans the other end!

Anyway we shall need to be booking up soon!

The site is great and keeps improving!

michele the prices I've been qouted recently are nowhere near those figures.
look around I'm sure you will get a better qoute than that, £3200 is the figure that seems to be the norm for a 20' that includes door to door, packing and loading.

The figure I was quoted was around what you say but when you add the insurance (mandatory) and VAT it gets to around the figure I have mentioned! The problem seems to be that in April Shipping costs will are due to be increased, so when you get a quote for later in the year they will take this into account!

Also they look at what you actually have to pack etc. and unpack! Also all the paperwork stuff to be done!

The shippers I would use are my next door neighbours and I know them well and when you get a price they stick to it! However, we are looking at culling a lot and then getting a further quote! Everyone says we will end up having to dispose of it all!

Thanks again.

Michelle,

The prices we have got are close to your quote but for a 40ft container, and includes packing and unpacking. One company quoted and told me that if shipping costs do increase they may have to amend the quote, but they certainly didn't quote based on a possible increase. I have had three quotes and the first two were fairly close, and the third one was much better. In fact they quoted a lower figure including VAT than the other two did before VAT. I would suggest that you get some more quotes as I can't believe that prices would double even if shipping costs do go up.

michele

The figures that I quoted (3200) were from a local company as well as others and inclusive of packing, loading, VAT and insurance.
If you packed and loaded yourself it was £1900-£2000 plus you had to take out your own insurance.
In the time that we have been making shipping enquiries we have found that there seems to be a general price although yes one or two companys do charge much more.
I have sent you a pm of a company that we will probably use.
Regards John
