Maybe the reason you've heard of people going but nothing since is, because they never came back :o :o :o

Maybe they were sold as slaves & havig to work in deep dark mines for gangsters

I'll get me coat

So you're going to fly to Syria buy some material, fly back, get some curtain made when you could just buy some of Athena Designs for a 10th of the price it will cost you for the above

If you want Syrian curtain Material there are 2 shops I know of in Paphos. Over the road to Carrefors next to the Pharmacy and over the road to Andy's telecoms down passed Paps into town. Easier than a trip to Syria they make up as well. Marj

The point is ,, you can buy the same material in syria for 3cyp per meter, that they are charging 20cyp per meter here in cyprus, plus they make the curtains for you .. you can go on weekend trips
for about 120cyp, so you get a trip, then you have your curtains made to measure ,, ready to bring back ...

plus our offices have a big bank of windows

We've been!! and come back.

It was an experience for sure...

Firstly, the curtain material can only be described as outdated retro. Bit like Grannies old thick, heavily embossed stuff, nothing modern at all that we saw. Did all the souks, French quater (which was the best bit) but not too sure I would go back.

Unless you get a 5* then its a bit like Youth Hostel accomodation only slightly less clean.
Unless you cover from head to toe the ladies get harassed endlessly and if you're blonde then you need a good vocabulary of swear words. The universal F*** off serves it's purpose but only if followed by a swift Knee in the B******s. The driving is worse than here - yes believe it.

The clothes chain Stefanel's is really good and cheap, and good quality selling at half the price it does here.

Good food in the french quater but left a lot to be desired in the main.

Overall, our stay was.........interesting.
Oh yes, we also had a YTS pilot who managed to miss the runway TWICE scaring the crap out of us.
So if it's just curtain material you want go and see the outlets in Paphos.

Tiggy

I believe George's material shop in Limassol is very good - and there's usually a map in the Grapevine.

Come on guys.

Where's your sense of adventure gone to?

If you're worried about the flight - you can go by ship. Ok, you won't get to Damascus but you can still get plenty of shopping (and curtains made) around the port area in Latakia. The Cypriots also go there to shop for door furniture (handles & fasteners etc) as they are a third of the cost than here - but remember, they are very heavy! Fabric for furniture coverings is also extremely cheap as well as quilts & bedding.

Cigarettes - are really cheap and I mean cheap! We got some last visit for a friend of ours. He gave us Cy£10 to get him some fags. We came back with 2 boxes of 200 and a fiver change!

Yes, it can be dusty - but, hey so it is here. We've been to Beirut & Syria and will be planning a sea trip to Syria for my (shh - 50th birthday) later this year.

Get yourselves out, see the world. It doesn't have to stop because we've all made the move to Cyprus.

Get up and go before it's got up and left. That's my motto for today

Hi Neil

We did Syria combined with a trip to Lebanon last time with Louis Cruise Lines. But, we were hoping to book the day excursion to Crac des Chevaliers fort onboard ship, not realising places were so limited as all the Cypriots tend to go for shopping and there are very few coach seats booked for the excursion - so, that is our main reason to go back.

This time - we will just do the Syria trip and are considering late October. However, it now looks like you get to Syria early Saturday morning with an overnight stay at the port and the excursion to the fort is the following day (Sunday). So, it looks like there will be lots of shopping to be done too! The ship leaves Limassol on Friday teatime & arrives back on Monday morning.

There are mini-buses laid on to take you from the ship to the huge Duty Free shops further along the port and also buses that take you into the main shopping areas of Latakia.

We found it very easy and had a great day wandering around the souk, in the duty free - back on board for our lunch then back off again for some more shopping.

Customs at Limassol port do tend to pick on the Cypriots when they arrive back from these trips as they know they've gone out looking for bargains.

So one big tip would be to dress like you are a tourist for your return to Limassol

Get your shorts and flip flops out and mutter things like "did they say there was a coach to take us back to the hotel"
