I spend most of my days in Cyprus, in my head that is, my body seems stuck in Bristol for now. But this morning we had a blue sky here and as I walked to work I listened to blackbirds singing(always a favourite sound for me) and it occured to me that this is something I will miss when we do move to CY.

Do you think as Britain and Cyprus are part of the EU we could introduce Blackbirds after all the Romans introduced Rabbits to the UK.

sorry got that friday afternoon feeling!

The blackbirds in our garden keep me amused for ages. We encourage all birds into the garden even if it does mean the odd rat !

I too miss the song of the blackbird but in compensation we have a family of kestrels that come back year after year and they always entertain us when teaching their young to fly. We get a good view of them from our bedroom window. Sod all else to look at being in the concrete jungle but the Kestrels are lovely.

I haven't clicked on JGG's link, but I have a friend who sent me blackbird song as it is one of the things I miss about the UK, too.

I think we should import them, but I am concerned that the Cypriots would view them as a delicacy and eat them.

I always find the swifts/swallows (not sure which) great entertainment when we are in Cy. Not sure if true but apparently they are the only bird that eats on the wing. One of you twitchers will put me right.

Saying that, they are a PIA when they shout all night, don't swifts ever sleep?

They also love to build their mud nests under our arches. Lots of mopping up involved.

Ruth,

We have had them nesting next door for the past four years and it is lovely to watch them, although at times you have to duck for cover or get splattered.

Last year I actually saw the young come out of the nest and their first attempts at flying - it was comical as a lot of the times they missed the perch they were heading for, but lucky enough none of them were hurt.

Normally there at least six nests next door and although they are back there are not as many as previous years. :(

We had a mud nest under one of our balconies last year and arrived home one day and found 4 liitle birds splattered on the floor, only assume they all tried to fly and couldn't make it. Was really upsetting so hope the nest isn't in habitation this year. I haven't seen any activity so far.
