We want to take our friend child on holiday with us who has down syndrome in July to Cyprus. He a smashing lad a really great laugh and so funny. We are going to pay for his mum and dad to come out to us, as they have not got a lot of money. The thing is the son who is only 15 has never been abroad, and i worried it might be to hot for him, do you think i should bring him in April or in October. He knows nothing about the holiday yet. Or do you think July will be ok, bear in mind i want to drive them all over Cyprus, yes in a air con car. I just want them to really love there holiday, and not worry about there son getting to hot, and bothered.

Mark, if I was in your shoes, I'd be looking at April or October, but not July, too warm to be travelling round the Island.

Having said that, April would not be so good if you are travelling to this side of the Island ( East ) as many things here don't open up until the Cyprus Easter, which is at the end of April...........................therefore, I'd choose October.

Hope you all have a great time whatever you decide.

I would say the first half of oct as it may be warm for the pool but if not there are hotels you can use.

Hi Mark,

I think it would be best to have a chat with his parents, I'm sure they will know by now what will suit him.

If they are not sure, there is probably a DS forum much like this where you could ask advice.

Hope you have a fab time if you do take him.

Ruth

Ruth i do not want to ask the parents, as it will be a surprise for them both. Do you know the web addy for the ds forum plz.

They have been great parents to there son, so i want to surprise them all. I have spoken to the dads boss and he said he give him anytime off that suits us all, as long i can give 2 weeks notice. What a great chap .

I know they are saving up for a holiday abroad, so i thought i step in to help out. They can stay in our villa so it will be only flights and not hotel.

What a lovely and thoughtful idea Mark. I'm sure either April or October would be brilliant for them.

Mark,

Imo, I would chose October, as most things don't open until May & the temperature in Oct is still quite warm :D

I would opt for October too. I have hd experience of being in the company of a family with a downes syndrome child, and I found that the Cypriots bent over backwards to be accommodating. They never showed any signs of treating them differently so Cyprus from my limited experience is a good choice anyway. I am sure theat all the family won't be disappointed.

Hi Mark,

I found this information, Not sure your friends son does have a heart condition but It does mention about insurance, I suppose that is something you should consider anyway, if it is going to be a last minute suprise.

PS. What a lovely thing you are planning to do for your friends. Good luck.

Hi Mark!

What a kind person you are!

The above advice is very sensible about insurance - I'm not sure how you could keep it a surprise when taking this into account.

I have a daughter with an illness and disability, and it takes quite a lot of planning to get doctors letter for permission to travel, adequate insurance etc. We need to take medical equipment too so we have extra hassle.

But good luck with your plans anyway, let us know how you get on.

Pam :D

Around 40% of Down's people have a heart condition and may have other conditions. It won't be a problem with insurance, and once you have told the parents about this holiday you can ask the question so that they can give you the information that the insurance company will require.

I would go for October, too, because it is a little quieter and the weather isn't so overpowering. I can't cope with the heat of July and August and it makes me crabby. The combination of hustle and bustle and heat may be a bit overwhelming.

Every Cypriot woman has a screening test for Down's syndrome when she is pregnant. The first trimester test was pioneered by a Pafian who lives and works in London. They know what Down's is. I believe they will make this lad very welcome.

I hope he and his family have a wonderful holiday, Mark. I took my Mum to Salou in October a few years ago and there were six or seven Down's children with their parents in the hotel. They were a delight, and I couldn't help but comment to one of the Mum's about how proud she must be of her son. He had had a fantastic holiday and was so full of it. I shed a tear or two during that week, I can tell you.

It's a wonderful thing you're doing Mark, I commend you for your efforts to help others :D :D

Me & H.I.D. took my sister on holiday to Spain after she seperated from her husband, she was in her late 40's & had never flown or been abroad before, so it was something she enjoyed very much :D :D

Mark

What a wonderful thought and surprise for all. Iwould also suggest you need to investigate any underlying problems for insurance purposes.

I would also like to read an account of their trip with the Hi's and Lo's of their and your experiences, so a blog for us to read would be a good idea, starting with their reaction when you first break the news of their hol.

Well Done Mark

Chris

Oh Pete they will go as they are trying to save up like mad, just to go on there first holiday abroad.

They told me a few week's ago, they would love to see Cyprus ? But money is so tight for them at the moment.

This is my way of thanking them, for being a great friend to us, and anyway they have done a lot for us over the yrs, and they need a break

I would agree that you mention everything when booking, especially any medical needs, apart from that April/October would be ideal.

Call if you need any assistance when they are over, be glad to help

I hear what you are saying Pete. Ok a quick run down to explain.

3 yrs ago i was on death door and was in hospital for over 1 mth, my wife was so worried about me , and thought i was going to die, and so did i. Anyway this family took over all our shopping, dog walking, took our boys into there house and looked after them. the list goes on and on, so really i was a charity case, they are just the most caring people you could wish for. And now i think it time i repaid them back with my kindness. If they do get upset about it , i shall remind them what they did for us as a family?????.

But i really do not think they will act that way, i think they just be pleased that they can have the first holiday abroad together and with some great friends to. :D
