Is it worth having one installed? I usually have to waste 10-15 litres of water before the hot water starts coming through , either at the shower or sink/wash basin , does a WPS give instant hot water when the tap is turned on ? I already have the electics in place for a WPS , how much to supply and fit a pump etc.?
Like to hear from members that have a WPS. Thanks.

Don't you lose your water if the electricity goes off? Our water trickles out as we don't have a WPS, but at least I can still clean, even if I can't hoover, when we get a leccy cut.

We have a WPS & I sometime wish we didn't, as it makes a racket when you switch on the taps, it doesn't work if the power goes off & we still don't get hot water right away...

Do WPS pumps not have a "intelligent" switch that will realise there is no electricity present and open the valve to allow water to flow at gravities pace ? I hadn't realised no electrics means no water - that would be a nightmare !

If you mixed a WPS with those aerating taps would you waste the same water as no WPS and normal tap ?

Nope, no intelligent switch but you can guess who would have installed it

We are still able to get a flow direct from the mains but thats only in the kitchen & its bloody freezing..

Also, the toilets don't refill so if you do go for a WPS, make sure it as a back up incase of a power cut

I did forget to mention one thing which might be important, our cold water tank isn't on the roof, its in the poolroom.... so we wouldn't get a natural gravity which may allow others to get water if the power if off

Thats what I said mate, Our cold water tank isn't on the roof, so no natural flow possible, as its in the pool room, so 20ft below the kitchen

I get your drift, but I don't think that'll work.
...Because the piping is not continuous - there's the tank and ball-cock (on the ground floor, I presume). The mains pressure/gravity would fill the tank, but bypassing the pump with a valve would merely allow water in the house's pipes to flow back into the tank.

However, if you had a valved pipe bypassing both the pump and tank (with valve normally closed), that should give you your gravity feed (the community water tank will always be high enough). You'd be advised to have an automatic reverse-flow check valve in the pipe, too.

But I have no idea if that would contravene any plumbing regs.

Edit: how cute/weird - a few lines above I wrote 'ball-c-o-c-k' without the last three hyphens, and the forum system changed it to 'ball-rooster'

if you are on a pump, and the electric goes off, you have several options:
- use a bucket to ferry water up from your pool room, from your driking water tap, etc.
- take showers using the pool shower
- install a manual pump, eg.

Providing you have a Cold tank above ground an easy pressure system that automatically allows "Gravity flow" in the event of powercut is to fit a "GRUNDFOS Dual inlet/outlet pump".
This auto starts when a tap is opened and therefor the pressure drops.
Our pump cost £450 in 2005.
