Looks like we are in for a rough couple of days ....

Flood alert amid storm warnings
The Environment Agency has issued a severe flood warning for the whole of the Devon and Cornwall coast amid storm warnings for south and west Britain.
Large parts of England and Wales are braced for what experts warn may be the worst storm of the winter.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for much of the UK, with winds of up to 80mph (130km/h).

Forecasters said storms on Monday and Tuesday could disrupt travel and bring down power lines and trees.

The Environment Agency's south-west area manager, Martin Wieler, told the BBC that everyone living along the UK coastline should be alert to possible flooding.

He said the danger was being posed by a "powerful combination" of low pressure and very strong winds combining with high tides.

Ferries between Portsmouth and Bilbao in Spain have also been cancelled because of a severe weather warning.

P and O Ferries said it has cancelled its Sunday sailing from Portsmouth to Bilbao, and from Bilbao to Portsmouth on 11 March.

The company's website also said sailings between Dover and Calais are being delayed by up to an hour because of the weather conditions.

'Strong message'

The Environment Agency is urging people to stay away from coastal areas, particularly in Wales, and the south west and north west of England, from Sunday to Wednesday.

FLOODLINE
Call 0845 9881188

David Rooke, head of risk management at the Environment Agency, told the BBC the predicted combination of up to 80mph gusts and higher than normal tides are likely to lead to flooding in coastal areas.

"We're giving a very strong message to stay away from coastal areas," he said.

"There will be huge waves, a lot of spray and it will be a very dangerous place to be."

The agency said it was "preparing for the worst" in Wales.

'Awesome sight'

John Mosedale, from Environment Agency Wales, advised people against going to the coast to watch the rough seas and big waves because of the danger of being swept out to sea.

"We are concerned that the sea surge could overtop defences along the coast of Wales," he said.

"We advise people to steer clear of places where waves crash over the coast.

"While they are an awesome sight, they do pose a very real and serious danger to people's lives."

Emergency planning teams are meeting in Pembrokeshire and Cornwall to prepare for possible floods. A stand-by supply of sandbags has been provided.

'Severe'

Cornwall's emergency planning officer Steve Winston said a combination of factors, including high spring tides and a very low pressure system, could lead to a "severe" event.

BBC weather forecaster Peter Gibbs said a storm of this ferocity usually occurs once a year.

Much of the severe weather this winter had hit the north of Britain, whereas this storm would affect the south and the west, he added.

Martin Young, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: "It will be very windy for many parts of the UK in the early part of next week, but especially so across coasts in the south.

"Southerly winds are expected to strengthen during the early hours of Monday causing severe gales.

"After a brief respite, further westerly severe gales are forecast for later in the day and into the early hours of Tuesday."

I know Tricia - not fair at all. We had very heavy rain and hailstone this morning, but then it brightened up and we managed a walk.
Looks like the storm clouds are gathering now though.

Counting the weeks now - 9 weeks on Wednesday till our holiday :banana

Notice when the south of Engalnd is in for some rough weather the warnings are 'Severe', but on the edge of the Pennines we get gale force winds and snow quite often.

Everything will most likely grind to a halt down there tomorrow - they just can't cope with a bit of rough weather.

Wussies!!

Take care then. Not exactly brilliant here today - cold and windy, but there again just what the kite flyers will want.

I was trying to contact my youngest son who was travelling back from Amsterdam some time today, I thought. Thankfully I received a text from him - eventually  - saying he was just travelling through the Channel Tunnel at 05.30 Cyprus time. So at least he is back in the UK. I was so relieved, I didn't mind being woken by his text.

I had visions of him being drowned at sea because of the gales.

You know what us Mum's are like. Vivid imaginations.

Looks awful Frank,

I remember that storm a few years ago, didn't it take out 5 of the 7 oak trees at Sevenoaks? what sticks in my mind is the fact I was stuck on a train to Charing Cross for 5 hours :( ... I don't miss it one little bit. We've got the sun shining here 20c 8)

It looks bad 'down south'.

We had a sunny morning here, raining now and not a breath of wind!

You would think that we weren't in the same country!

I am glad you didn't post that before I knew that Nathan was back in the UK, Frank. I thought he was going to be on the Dover ferry but am glad he wasn't.

I am still waiting for a text to tell me he is home safe. No news is good news I suppose.

Sorry if you are having a rough day in the UK. We have wall to wall blue skies here - been good for the kite flying. But there is still time for some electrical storms to come in yet.

Frank,
If we up here on the North East coast were lucky enough to have weather like that in your photo, the beach would be full of deck chairs, the sea would be full of swimmers and lilo's and the ice cream sales would go through the roof !

We've seen no sign of the bad weather in Cleveland. Bit of rain, cool and some sunshine :D The poor southerners have taken a bit of a battering in the last few months.

The storms have subsided here in West Wales but thee was apparently quite a lot of structural damage done. It is peeing down here right now, but no wind. Roll on Saturday when I touch down in Cyprus, providing the plane can take off from Cardiff that is

I hope it does come here, even at 20% of its power this storm would surely give much needed wet torrential rain and general wet weather ..... id rather hide inside for 2 weeks now than have a 35C 90% humidity August day and no water coming out the tap !
