I filmed a 70th party on Wavedancer last year and the music was everything from Elvis to Kool & The Gang! And some recent stuff too, Amy Winehouse, and Duffy etc. .....Excellent stuff.

Interesting thing I read, though, was that the songs that seem to have most impact on us are the songs we listened to when we were mid teens (15-17)

Dunno how true this is.

Big Red. Would it be a big mistake to go back to when she was born?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTeiYN_Vq6E

It's her night so probably teen years music may be a better idea. Perhaps mid 50's early 60's music

Any thoughts?

So, your wife was born in 1943?

The music that has stayed with me through the decades has been music that I first heard when I was in my 20's.

So, for your wife, this would suggest the 60's, early 70s.

Is she into the Rolling Stones or Rod Stewart?

If Mick and Rod were not her cup of tea, maybe she is into the Beatles / Elton John / Tom Jones?

I don't think you could go far wrong with the above, unless of course she is more into Val Doonican and Barry Manilow.

I think you know more than we do about your wife's musical tastes. Why not have another look at your record collection? Let us know!

There are so many things to think about when you start examining your likes and dislikes in music over such a long period of time,an awful lot depends on how important music is or was to you,an exercise i have tried in the past is this, look at your life in 10 year sectors start at the first 10 and work forward.
all the way through the pop music of the day leaves its mark, some great stars will leave a slightly deeper mark, but the deepest mark of all will be a performance that affected you emotionally, not because it may have been sad but it sprung from a performance of pure talent that took your breath away,if you are lucky and had more than a few of those, wonderful,it could have been 60 years ago or last week, put your minds to it they are there.

Excellent choice of first video.

Second video reminded me of amusing scene in Love Actually.

:congrats
