I'm going to the UK in early May, and will need to hire a car. I have still got my UK driving licence  , so of course it still has my old UK address on it. Has anybody had a problem hiring a car using their old UK licence, and did you spill the beans and confess you now live in Cyprus? Were you penalised for this? I am considering picking a car up at Manchester Airport (means I don't have to get someone to pick me up and take me back  ) - I have never done this, so what happens? Where do you pick the car up from, and where do you take it back to? Who do you recommend? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I know if I get a taxi it will cost me at least £70 return, and that's half the amount of the hire car for the week

Hope you can help - I know you will

Hi Jean,
Dave ,my hubby went to Man last week for a few days. He booked his hire car on-line thru a company called National Car Rental because they were the only co. to accept a debit card...the other companies he tried insisted on a credit card payment which we dont have. Also, they were the cheapest. :) Very good service and nice car.
They have a kiosk at the airport (as do the other car hire companies) and someone escorts you to your car. No-one bothered about the old UK address on his driving license.
Hope that helps,
Chris.x

Jean,

I can't answer all your questions, but be careful using a driving licence with your old address on. If something were to happen, (assuming you managed to hire a car with it), you need to be aware that the DVLA are linked directly to the PNC, (Police National Computer), and also the Electoral Roll - all can be checked literally in seconds.

Do you have an international licence?

Someone will no doubt, be able to help more.

Pam

Chris has beaten me to it - but I'll post this anyway.

Be all right if you get speeding ticket as it will go to your old addy so they can pay it.To reitereate what pam says it can be checked in seconds and licence should be changed as circumstances has.Sure someone will know more.

If you get a speeding ticket the charge will go to the hirer and will be deducted from your credit card - which is why they insist on credit card payment.

We hired a car over the Christmas period from a company called 1car1. It cost £109 for the week for a Corsa - but we had to suffer an upgrade to a posh saloon as they hadn't got any Corsa's over the Christmas period. The out of hours extra charge was £25 as we arrived at around 1 a.m. The website is http://www.1car1.com or I have the email address of the lady who dealt with our enquiry if you want me to email it to you. She was very good. I think the price we got was discounted as we told them we saw their ad in one of the Cyprus papers.

They take a debit card for payment.

It was easy to pick the car up and drop it off, and you are taken into an office to sign all the paperwork and pay, and then you are familiarised with the car.

We still have our old UK licences. The DVLA were not interested when I informed them that we would be living in Cyprus. We keep meaning to change the address to a relative's as we would receive any correspondence that should arise if we did that.

Thanks Guys

I knew you would be able to help - I have just got a credit card from Alpha (mainly because of my trip to Australia as back-up), so that makes it easier now. I will have a look at the websites and let you know how I go on.

Hi Jean

We always hire a car when we go back to the U.K. Try:

http://www.travelsupermarket.com/travel ... ?package=6

They always give a selection of different hire companies.

Jean,

Do be careful about the credit card - I have an Alpha one but it turns out it is for "electronic use only" and the car hire company we booked with were using an agent who would not take it - we had to pay twice as much to actually get a car at Gatwick!

hi jean
i,m in the same position as yourself and for my last couple of visits have used the travelsupermarket site.
we have a visit booked next month and car hire is coming in from gbp129 for 9 days ,thats collect and drop off at heathrow airport.
never had a problem with the licence always advising them.
pays to hire from the airport because the taxi drivers there shame the cyprus ones with charging but at least they go on meter!!!! (sometimes they go the wrong way though  but guess who knows west london like the back of his hand haha!!)
shame all the car hire companies only give you crappy absolute minimum insurance then try and add on up to gbp100 extra for special insurance :!: , im looking at a separate annual top up policy to supplement the hire companies insurance costing about gbp40 to cover excesses but covers multiple journeys dont forget to read the small print.
enjoy your trip.
paul

Like Verity I hired a car from 1car1. Picked up at Gatwick, very very good service. I too had to suffer an upgrade for no extra cost. They asked if the address showing on my licence ( the last but one UK address I had) was where I was staying and I said yup. So no problems there. They accepted my booking without requesting payment on line. How nice is that ???
Well worth the enquiry. Try 1car1.com/expat. That should get you UK£99 per week immediately. Of course, then it may be a tad dicey with regards to a UK licence. Worth a try though. I also paid by bank debit card...when I picked up the car.
Hope this helps
Paul

Thanks Paul and everybody else

At the moment I am searching t'internet looking for good prices - of course, since I moved to Cyprus I have only driven automatics, so would prefer an automatic in the UK. If I get a manual I'll probably end up stalling it on the way out of Manchester Airport   . I'll let you all know how I go on.
