Hello, My dad wants to send me over a swift but i am getting soo confused reading everything on the internet, especially as it has recently changed and some information is from before the change.

So far the things i know i have to pay are:
Shipping RO RO (approx 500)

Then when i go to collect the car from limassol port i will have to pay :
port charge and deliver order - 285
customs clearance - 80
registration - 150
number plate - 20
MOT - 35
Road tax

i have also read that there is no import duty just excise duty? is that correct? i have used the excel calculator off the customs and excise website and that says for a 2007 swift would only be 534.48 which seems a bit low. and to add to that an extra 0.02 per cc.

I have read that alot of paper work can be done by an agent? What do they charge and what is it exactly that they do??

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

I *presume* your figures are in €uros???

I bought in an HRV before the goal-posts moved and paid in Euros ...

Shipping - 770.50
Port fees 462
Import 'duty' - 379.68 (the new rules would be around ten times that!!)
Agent - 350
MOT - 35
Registration - 179
Number Plates - 32

We used ANW motors at Tremithousa as our agent, they were excellent

Are you are using the new calculator which uses the CO2 to calculate the excise duty. There is no import duty, its called Excise ;-)

Also, make sure the car clears customs in Limassol, as if its a bit late in the day they will give you a temporary clearance and you have to go to Paphos customs to get it cleared and there are some more charges then.

When was this you brought it over? What i have read there is no import duty anymore just excise which mainly depends on the co2 emission. Have used calculator off customs website and it worked out pretty cheap.
I still Dont undertsand what an agent actually does though and why u need to pay them so much. My friend bought a car over years ago when it was cyprus pounds and she paid an agent 40C£

<<When was this you brought it over?>>
16th Sept 2013 (IIRC) - just the time they changed the rules!

<<What i have read there is no import duty anymore just excise>>
It's still money you have to pay, whatever you call it ;)

<<which mainly depends on the co2 emission>>
Indeed. HRV has high emissions

<<I still Dont undertsand what an agent actually does though>>
Apart from the shipping, they arranged everything.
Took us to the port, via a Gov't office in Paphos to sign 'a form' and get it stamped.
Took us to the correct office in the port, the guy in there did several Cypriot shrugs and said we would have to wait at least three hours as they were sooooo busy ... half an hour later we were dealt with
Took us to the correct Gov't office in Paphos to get more forms signed and stamped
Took us to the right office to get the duty paid
Took us to the registration office to get the car registered
Bypassed that 'horrible' woman on the front desk in the above office
Other helpful stuff, too numerous to mention.

Like most things, stuff you can do yourself if you have time ... lots of it ... we were only on holiday for 10 days. On my own, it would have taken longer than that!

If you do decide to employ an agent, Gwenny's Red Tape Services in Paphos (she has a website) is a mine of information, valuable advice and she is very approachable.

I haven't imported a vehicle, but I'm pretty sure she deals with that process.

When I used her services she got things done quickly and cut through all the crap that would've flummoxed me and I thought what I paid was very reasonable.

One assumes that the forms mentioned are all still in Greek, so an agent if you're time restricted can definitely be seen as a godsend.

If you're here permanently, not in a rush and prepared to take the siga, siga approach - then you could have a bash yourself but remember, it may take you more than one visit to the port authorities and the other offices. And of course, have the wherewithal to make your way from Paphos to Limassol and back (ie some kind of a vehicle maybe) ;)
