For any one who dose not know it, from the 14 th april this year their will be no more updates for Windows XP operating system.
This is the longest running O/S microsoft has ran.

When I got a new laptop not so long back , I asked someone to take windows 7 off and re-instal XP
They told me to forget it and just get use to windows 7 as they are dumping XP soon ..
glad I took there advise ...

Joke you might, but a good current Linux distribution (the alternative to Microsoft Windows) will run at very acceptable speeds on a Windows 98 machine, and maybe even a 3.1 machine.

I use Ubuntu which is free and comes bundled with browser, office suite, photo and video handling software, and lots lots more. It is so secure it doesn't need a virus guard or firewall, is easy to use and doesn't freeze up. I get free automatic updates every week or so.

Other than corporate brianwashing, I can think of no other reason why more people don't use it.

Josef I tried downloading Ubuntu but it says for Desktop! Can it be used on a laptop and if so is the download the same?

Forgive my ignorance Joseph K, but I have only ever used machines with software pre-loaded.
Can the Ubuntu be uploaded to the machine with the existing operating system still in place without resulting in 'armageddon'?
Basically, what is the proceedure to effect the changeover?

All this talk about Ubuntu made me look in our cuboards, and I found SUSE LINUX 10.0 O/S.
It is a 5 cd set unused, this was purchased to try out.
It has every thing you need on the discs.
Make me a decent offer for it if you want it.
It cost around £30 when I got it!

I have downloaded the same Ubuntu onto a notebook (mini laptop) as well as a desktop with no problems.

When you load it you have 2 options. Either it replaces Windows, or it installs alongside Windows and gives you the choice of which to use each time.

Just for info, I am currently using an old Compaq desktop I picked up at auction for 100 euros. A decent replacement secondhand keyboard cost me 3 euros at a market. A bit more memory and a wireless card cost me about 35 pounds on Amazon. Ubuntu was free. There you have it, a good fully functioning system for about 150 euros.
For the techies, it's pentium 4, 2.5GB RAM, 155GB ROM.

Do you need to change your e mail address if you use Ubuntu?

I should not think so as Ubuntu is a opertating system, and this should not affect your email address.

So what is liable to happen if you do not upgrade from XP. And if you do upgrade could you find that a lot of your programes will no longer work, such as XCELL and photoshop.

Turn off the automatic updates in the os, it should run ok as some people still have windows 98 running.

I have Adobe photoshop 6 running on 2 windows 7 64 bit systems no problem, their is backwards compatablty built in to windows 7.

If you use a 64 bit os then you will find 2 program files in the os 1 for 64 bit programs and 1 for 32 bit (x86) programs.

I have had 2 computers with genuine xp os systems that have had WGA saying the os was counterfit in the last week.

Both came from the same computer shop in Paphos!

The windows updates are already turned off for some reason. Is it better to do these updates today before I turn it off or leave it as it is. I do have norton virus installed so presume this will be okay as well. The photo shop is 3.00, so quite an old one. I mainly use an Ipad for the internet.

If you are not using it on line then you have no problem.

I would not both with any updates today, I think Microsoft have put out something that makes the os say it is not genuine.

Scarring people to change the os me thinks!

Photoshop 2.00 is that the clockwork one!

What is the cpu and ram in the computer.

Also Norton slows machines down.

The PC is a a dell DIMC521. AMDAthnlon(tm) 64x2duel core processor 3800+, 2.00GHz, 1.93GB ram. Norton does not like windows update turned off, I have 52 days left to run on norton before I renew my subscription. According to the hard drive the total size is 145GBwith75.3free. As I say mostly photos and excell and word documents.

The photoshop is 3.00 not 2.00 as it sayson the box.

Why not ditch Norton and get a free AV?

Photoshop 6.0 is the full on printing trade version I have, what a complex program it is I still do not know how to use it to the full!

You can work with layers doing the graphics and that can run in to thousands of them.

Let me know if your interested in it.

You could run Window 7 64 bit with that set up, But you need to save all your files as you have to do a clean install to the hard drive.

You can not upgrade from XP to Windows 7!

If you do not have a external drive get one to put all your files on.

If you computer fails the you do not lose your data.

Also noted that my zoombrowser program which downloads from the cannon cameras cannot be used in windows 8, only 7.
I got the norton with a laptop which has windows 7. Used AVG free before that. Have sorted the norton out now, I think it was just a warning.
All a pain in the ..... . As you say scaring people into changing computers and upgrading. But it doesn't end there.
I think windows may have updated every time I switched the machine on, as I had it set so I could approve updates. It's now off as you advised. Cheers for your help Julia
