I am visiting cyprus next year
and was wondering, what is the diffirence between
souvla and souvlaki ?
are they the same thing ..

Hi Sam

In answer to your question......

Souvla are large pieces of meat (5-6cm) with bone skin etc generally pork, lamb or chicken which are spiked onto large stainless steel skewers then cooked, in a rotating spit fashion, over charcoal or wood for a number of hours with a plentiful supply of salt and seasoning being added throughout the cooking. VERY DELICIOUS & WORTH WAITNG FOR!!

Souvlaki are very small pieces of meat (1-2cm) skewered on small wooden skewers and cooked on a grill or griddle. These are generally eaten in a pitta with salad onion & plenty of lemon juice & salt

Just to confuse the issue more..... souvlaki can also be cooked on smaller stainless skewers on the same BBQ/Souvla grill as the souvla (but obviously for a much shorter time

Steve ... I always cook ours on the metal skewers directly over the charcoal and had thought this was the traditional way (my mother in law is from round these parts) until we went to see some family who were doing the wooden skewers thing and i thought they were amateurs, but thankfully kept my trap shut :P My mouth is watering after reading your descriptions ... hehe :D having had souvla for a while !

Also adding "-aki" to a normal word suggest a small and/or cute version of the main word .. hence souvlaki is just small/cute/friendly version of Souvla .... anyone called "Aki" is a short name for something else, like we say Jim for James they can have Yiannaki for Yianni etc !

The seafood Shop on the Paphos-Coral Bay road have haggis, they also have excellent Stornoway Black Pudding....if your really desperate Chillys have Grants Haggis in a can (not actually as bad as it sounds)!
