I was led to understand that after the UK signed Article 50 of the EU treaty, the default
position of Brexit has to be a "no deal".
This would mean that on 31st October UK would leave the EU if there was not any formal deal agreed by the UK Parliament.
Does the latest veto vote (yesterday) alter that default position?

Leaving the EU on the 31st October 2019 without a deal is the enshrined in the Withdrawal Agreement and therefore EU Law, it is also the Law of the Land in the UK. It would take another Act of UK Parliament and changes to the Withdrawal Agreement to change it and there isn't time to do that.

Three Court cases are in progress, one to determine if we lawfully joined the EU in the first place and two to decide if Theresa May had the law on her side to change the Article 50 dates. They will all be decided after we have left EU. We live interesting times.

It is actually enshrined in the Lisbon Treaty and UK Law when Parliament voted to activate Article 50 of that Treaty. Yesterday's vote doesn't change that. It was just gesture politics that makes it even more difficult to actually get a deal.

The Withdrawal Agreement has been rejected three times and is dead in the water.

If Boris becomes PM as expected, short of an eleventh hour deal from the EU (which is not unknown), Britain will leave the EU without a deal at the end of October. The EU cannot impose an extension to that end date.

If nothing has changed, to an outsider like me it is difficult to understand why they held such
a debate and vote anyway!

Far too many people who were elected on a platform to leave the EU believe that staying in the EU is more important than the principle of democracy and are determined to protect their own interests regardless.

In my country we call that corruption, and dereliction of duty.

That's what it's called in the UK. After Brexit it will be one of the many charges some Remainers in politics, Civil Service & Police will face in the Truth & Reconciliation Committees that the public will demand to be established to repay them for their treachery.

Why do you say that? Is it just your opinion, or do you know something Clive does not?

Its the reality, no action will be taken against the self serving inbreeds of politics, civil service who only wish to line their own pockets.

In the UK and everywhere corruption and self interest is rife. At least here is relatively open and easier to see/work with/work against. In Uk they are just better at hiding it.

Probably the biggest con trick on an entire population/generation etc has been the gravy train allowed to be set up called the EEC, EEA, EU or whatever guise it takes.
