I contacted our favourite Paphos hotel regarding making a direct booking. The price we were quoted was more expensive than a holiday which included flights through a travel company at the same hotel.

What you have suggested does not come as a complete surprise.

The TUI's/Jet2's/Thompsons ( and previously Thomas Cook ) negotiate massive discounts with hotels because they offer 100s/1000s of room booking a year and will have quoted you the full room rate without discount for a "one off" booking

An easy solution, of you have your heart set on a particular hotel is to take the package deal and this may include breakfast in the price

I know all about bulk booking but there are always spare rooms, we have been to this hotel several times, don't want breakfast either as we always go self catering,

I'd call that a result then. Just book through the tour company!

A result for the tour company yes, surely the hotel management would make more profit by meeting us part way, it's not as if we're not known to them,

If you book a hotel and don't want breakfast as you say you prefer SC why not go SC anyway? Tell me do you take your own beer and wine in from the supermarkets too?! Perhaps the hotel realises they won't make much money from you and would rather give the room to someone else!

There is one hotel in Paphos we have stayed at a number of times over the years and when I looked at sites such as booking.com and Century Travel for a Christmas break this December I decided to contact the hotel direct. Not only did I get a free room upgrade but the whole package cost €30 more than the same one in 2007 - and yes, it was considerably cheaper than the aforementioned companies. Most of the original staff were there too!

I never said we have breakfast, we always go 'Self Catering'.
As we travel a lot visiting friends etc we don't want to be tied to hotel meal times we prefer to choose our mealtimes.

Visited a travel agent today who told us that since the incident with the Israelis in Ayia Napa booking for Cyprus in general are down. You can get 7 days self catering in Paphos for £109 in April and £139 in May.

I actually think Bassman is right. I have relatives currently booking to come to Cyprus and they were told the same thing.

Maybe there are fewer teenagers coming to Ayia Napa 'cos their parents won't let them. That's no bad thing!

You need to consider how many teenagers come to Cyprus and how much money they spend here. I am willing to bet that it is into the millions!

So what! If the authorities cleaned Ayia Napa up and got rid of it's AWFUL reputation and attracted a better quality of tourist Cyprus would probably make many more millions.

I remember back in the day when All Inclusives came out they were designed for the absolute top level of client and offered at only the most exclusive of places. Now however sadly they are offered as bucket price holidays providing only standard services at discount prices.

The best idea of the year award goes to Beverley.......just wish the authorities and hotels would take notice. Even if the all exclusive was only 5 nights out of the week leaving 2 nights days out of 7 for them to slum it in the bars and restaurants of the town. Im sure it would benefit the whole town

In recent years they have cleaned up Ayia Napa. It no longer has that same reputation and attracts a lot of families these days. Yes there are still bars and clubs, but we have those in Paphos too!

I would but tomorrow I go to the hospital for tests, we lost a holiday in Cyrus last May due to ill health so we're not taking any chances this year.

The main reason that we go Self Catering is because we like to travel round the island without being tied to meal times. We pick up a hire car at the airport and drop it off there when we leave, we save the bulk of the car hire fess by not paying £90 for transfers for the two of us.
