Does anyone happen to know what is happening with regard to outpatient appointments at Paphos General Hospital?

I have a regular appointment with my urologist and that is coming up soon and I am hoping that it will still be available, or I will very soon afterwards be in trouble . :( Normally he telephones if there are any changes, but as the medical system has problems with the virus, I wonder if he will have access to his office and diary.

I cannot be the only one with a similar problem, so can anyone cast any light on what is happening.

I cannot speak specifically for the General, but the Gesy system allows doctors to access patients records from home, so there should be no reason why he can't check his diary and patient notes. What I can't answer is whether he is still running clinics.

Thanks, but I know he keeps a hand written diary. He is not listed in the telephone directory and I only have his office number, so if he has not made contact, I will ring my GP a little nearer the time to see if she knows how to contact him.

Outpatient clinics at Paphos hospital to reopen on Monday

A plan has been set in motion for the reopening of the Paphos general hospital’s outpatient clinics on April 27, hospital director Joseph Moutiris said on Friday.

On Thursday, Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou said that, under a new decree coming into force on Monday, both public and private hospitals, which to date have been treating emergencies only, will be allowed to make appointments for patients.

This would be followed with a new decree a few days later, allowing hospitals to carry out previously scheduled surgeries.

As far as the Paphos hospital is concerned, Moutiris said doctors and nurses working there have been preparing since mid-March when, due to a cluster of coronavirus cases detected, more than half of the people working there were ordered to stay at home for an indeterminate amount of time.

At the moment, Moutiris said, the hospital is operating two new temporary wings, specifically a nursing station and a screening clinic for patients that present Covid-19 symptoms but who haven’t been tested yet.

That's interesting and welcome news given that I have an appointment scheduled for May 6th. I had already discussed it with my GP who said I should attend the hospital on that date and would make alternative arrangements for me if it was cancelled..

Following a decree by the health ministry the outpatients departments of public and private hospitals opened on Monday morning for patients other than those being treated for the coronavirus.

At Nicosia general there was little more than a trickle of patients, all of whom had there temperature taken before entering.

The public can now visit hospitals and clinics for the treatment of cases which are not urgent as long as they have an appointment.

According to spokesman of health services organisation Okypy Charalambos Charilaou, rescheduling previous appointments which were cancelled due to the coronavirus has started.

He stressed no one will be seen without a confirmed appointment.

At all the outpatients departments the necessary measures to protect staff and patients have been taken, Charilaou said.

All surgeries which are not life-threatening are still suspended.

As the number of cases of coronavirus detected in Cyprus remains below ten daily, Health Minister Constantinos Ioannou on Sunday said the good news paves the way for the next steps.

In a message posted on Twitter, Ioannou said “we have a plan for the gradual lifting of restrictive measures” so that people can return to their daily routines.

UPDATE

In Paphos, 50 patients had visited the state hospital’s outpatient clinic by lunchtime, using a separate entrance and exit where masks were handed out and temperatures were taken.

Appointments were arranged to space out visits.

“The patients will arrive half an hour before their appointment, there will be a specific entrance for the outpatient clinics. There will be a strict check on whether they have an appointment or not. Unnecessary accompanying persons will not be allowed, only in exceptional cases where the health condition of the patient requires it. The temperature will be taken, if there is a fever or respiratory symptoms, then the person will be referred to the screening office and will not be allowed to enter the outpatient clinic. Masks will be handed out, washing hands will be done with an antiseptic,” Charilaou explained.

The rescheduling of previous appointments which were cancelled due to the coronavirus has now started.

He reiterated that to be admitted to outpatient clinics, each patient must have an appointment confirmed by a phone call.

Just had a phone call from my consultant to confirm that my appointment is still on for next week, which is a huge relief.

I had my outpatient appointment and surgical procedure this morning. The hospital telephoned yesterday and I was told to arrive five minutes before my re-scheduled appointment, and no earlier. The car park had plenty of spaces and there was no-one waiting at the Urology reception. Someone in an earlier post mentioned that labels were no longer in use. That is not in fact correct. Labels are still issued and used by the doctor.

The usual melee outside the operating theatres was completely absent. There was just the previous patient leaving and me arriving. I was treated and out of the hospital within 45 minutes and was relieved to see that they were taking anti-viral precautions very seriously. Let's hope they keep that up, as sometimes the place can be like a war zone.
