I'm very lucky to have lived in and travelled to many fascinating places and find menu misprints and strange dishes very amusing, here are a few I can remember just now but I'm sure more will pop back into my memory!

In Turkey Yoc Kumurta are Ram's Balls - this amused an American friend so much he asked if he could take a copy of the menu away with him.

Stoofayed peppers - speaks for itself.


In Paphos in the 1980s Chicken Gordon Blue was very popular and is still available on many menus locally!

There is a restaurant in Coral Bay who advertises Fish, chips and green peace

I don't mean to detract from the humour, but carbonara is often served with an egg on top. A few years back we had lunch at a 5* restaurant in Aix-en-Provence. OH ordered spaghetti carbonara and it was served with a raw egg cracked on top of it, which you stirred in yourself. Absolutely delicious.

Going back to signs, many years ago I visited Shaftesbury in Dorset. If you walked down a narrow alley, it took you to an amazing viewpoint. At each end of the alley was a sign that read "The fouling of the footpath by dogs is prohibited. Pedestrians only!"

Yuk, no italian I've spoken to has ever come across it and raw eggs can be seriously dangerous plus the French have a thing about raw food anyway! Traditionally the egg is whisked in with the parmesan cheese to make the sauce - some people use cream instead! Don't want to hijack the thread, but I just wanted to say that the egg cooks into the sauce as you mix it in. It was absolutely delicious!

Personally, I have had Carbonara in many countries INCLUDING Italy and often had it with an egg on top

I was wondering about this, so consulted our friend Google! The egg is usually added raw and stirred in so that it doesn't scramble. If you cook it right through you end up with a cheesy sauce with scrambled egg and pasta. The chef can either stir in the raw egg just before serving or, in our case, cracks the eggs on top for you to mix in yourself and eat straight away.

If you don't want to use raw eggs, the alternative is to put a friend egg on top as it will be fully cooked.

Yes, there are risks in eating undercooked eggs, but this relates mainly to the young and the old. Most people are fine with it.

OK let's get back to the original topic

Way back in 1972 OH went on a school trip to Germany and came back with a bottle of sparkling water which he kept for many years.

We no longer have the bottle or a photo, but here is a pic of a similar product with the same name!

On that vein, we did a rugby tour of Denmark around 1982 time and drank Elephant Beer in a hotel located above the spunk bar Copenhagen.

Effsie, about 25 years ago the was a brand of milk on sale in Germany with the name " Dik " after 4 hours in the local bar you try keeping a straight face !
One i have seen in Cyprus more than once " no parking for customers only "
Whilst I don't speak Russian, my wife does and she finds some signs very amusing, clearly there are a number of people who think they can speak Russian but can't ! E.g. putting " ya ya" on the end of a word. I tried putting the Russian character but the form won't accept the Russian character set.

Effsie years ago my 1st wife made me spaghetti and sausage, sausage carbonara, I laughed so much when she told me the name of the dish, because she had burnt the spaghetti. That hurt !

Saw a For Sale ad in my local paper about 15 yrs ago.
