My son was up there earlier. It is horrific. People have posted photos on Facebook of house on fire on driveways and my son saw whole houses engulfed in flames. There are many homeowners doing what they can with hosepipes to protect their homes.

In addition to the usual helicopters another three have arrived from Akrotiri and fire engines are coming from Limassol to help.

Never seen flames licking up between the houses before. Truly scary to see.

Apparently the fire was caused by an electrical cable falling down in the high winds and sparking in the undergrowth

Thank goodness no injuries or loss of life

Our thoughts and prayers go to all who have lost their homes and possessions
Must have been very frightening

Another very hot day today

Stay safe all

The official comments so far say that the fire started in several different places which is indicative of something started deliberately (although they are normally lit in more isolated areas).

It is a terrible thing however it started but I really hope that it wasn't deliberate.

Further to my post above there are now reports about a couple of electricity cables falling to the ground and sparking. Aside from being quite unusual I wonder what happened about the original reports of the fire being set in a number of different locations.

Apparently witnesses saw what happened with the electricity cables ...

and so the wrong assumption of someone deliberately setting the fires was with drawn yesterday.

The fire department confirmed what had happened when they did their investigation that it was indeed caused by the electricity cables coming down and sparking

Very unusual...but we had high winds yesterday

Tala itself was okay. The fire was in Kamares.
