Stricter measures aimed at stopping the spread of the coronavirus and the recently identified potentially more transmissible Omicron variant came into force Monday, including the Republic’s two airports.

From Monday and until January 10 next year, all inbound travellers will have to undergo PCR testing and foot the cost of the test, which is around €15.

Christmas and other events in schools and shopping centres have been banned while local authority permission is needed for outdoor events, which must adhere to health and safety protocols.

Businesses and organisations can have 20 per cent of their staff work from home, except those considered essential services.

The government has also suspended army exercises involving reservists until February 28.
