just thought i would look at the facts of the premiership and see how many points the 3rd bottom team had when it got relegated

see below

3rd bottom team in each premiership season and points they have got
1992-1993 crystal palace 49 pts 42 games average points 1.17
1993-94 sheff utd 42pts 42 games average points 1.00
94/95 cyrstal palace (4th bottom) 45pts 42 games average points 1.07
95/96 man city 38pts 38 games average points 1.00
96/97 sunderland 40pts average points 1.05
97/98 bolton 40pts average points 1.05
98/99 charlton 36pts average points 0.95
99/00 wimbledon 33pts average points 0.87
00/01 man city 34pts average points 0.89
01/02 ipswich 36pts average points 0.95
02/03 west ham 42 pts average points 1.11
03/04 leicester 33pts average points 0.87
04/05 crystal palace 33pts average points 0.87
05/06 birmingham 34pts average points 0.89
06/07 sheff utd 38pts average points 1.00

i think west ham was an exception, but it surprises me just how few points you actually need to stay up now, why is that?

Boro have always baffled me. They tend to be a team who - if they are on tv - I turn over. I get the feeling that, if the fans can't be bothered to turn up (stadium always looks half empty), then they must no something I don't.

Yet when they had the spending sprees for the liked of Juninho, Emerson and Ravanelli - at least they were playing entertaining football.

:banghead :tickedoff :tickedoff

stadium looks half empty can be deceptive, if they put the tv cameras on the other stand you would think it looked nearly full

but what annoys me is we average about 27000 (not massive i agree) but that is 1 in 12 of the people on teesside (pop 365k roughly thats including redcar/eston/thornaby/billingham and yarm as well as boro as there are only 140k in boro itself)

now i know that outside of the NE and the top 4 noone would get near to that level of support

remember boro is just a small town (36th biggest in england)

Can't agree with you on attendances Smurf. Boro fans have used this excuse for years and I do not believe it is true at all. For instance, when Boro got to that European final ( by the way did they turn up?) Everyone and his dog on Teesside was a Boro fan. How quickly that was forgotten about.
That table you linked us to states Boro itself has a population of 140,000 but that Teesside has a population of 400,00.
Stockton which is very much pro Boro has a population of about 125,000 if you include Billingham.
According to your table Sunderland has a population of 177,000 yet we get about 17/18,000 more than Boro do.
Norwich which has a population of 174,000 consistently average 24,000 and are in a league below Boro ( a ratio of 1 in 7)
As everyone knows, smoggies have two heads and I suspect that figure of 27,000 as an average is misleading as it must have been a head count, in which case your average is 13,500 !
Good Night now
Gary

now gary i have already said in the last post that teesside has a population of 365k including eston stockton etc thanks for reading it properly :doh

re norwich the size of population it draws on (i will ignore the south of norfolk as some of them may support ipswich and i will ignore west norfolk as heaven forbid there may be a peterborough fan in the area) is about 550k people (a ratio of 1 in 23) still a very good attendance in the championship mind

regarding sunderland you can add up the areas surrounding it if you want some people have said that the poulation around the conurbations of tyneside and wearside combined are over 1 million, like i have already said the othe NE teams and top four teams aside boro are one of the best supported teams out there by % of the areas fans going to the games

Smurf, I think that is a ridiculous claim and one I will not accept. You have no one south of Boro in competition with you.
The nearest big club to the south is lord knows how many miles away including Leeds. You get support from Darlington which is a big town and not included in the Teesside population of 400,000.
Your support, home and away is a joke.
Gary

ok whatever you say, strange how hartlepool is even closer to boro than darlo but there are a damn site more sunderland and newcastle fans in hartlepool than boro fans, the same applies in darlo, regarding the south of the boro, from northallerton down is all leeds, your argument doesn't hold fast

it is like saying west and north of yourself and newcastle there is no team so they all support either newcastle or sunderland (which is rubbish)

traditionally anyone outside of boro/billingham/stockton (as far as county durham is concerned) where either mackems or geordies and unfortunately that is still the case today as both sunderland and newcastle are potentially far bigger than boro could ever be :(

Well I would say West and North of us do support us or Newcastle !
The support for Boro is there they just will not come out unless it's a Cup Final etc.
I know Teesside and the Sunderland area very well and I'm sure Teesside has more people.
Anyway 37 points should see you safe !
Gary
