When considering purchasing a home when the occupiers will have mobility problems and disability needs. Is there any specifics you would like to see built into the Developements to make life a lot easier?

I feel the following should be an option:

Waist high switches and plug sockets.
No stairs and gentle slopes.
Accessible gardens and pool entry systems.
Bathroom aids and modifications.

There must be a million more. What would you consider is needed?

If you buy from a reputable builder, all these and more can be built into your property. Just make sure you arrange it all, confirmed in writing, before you sign the contract.

Many properties, mine included, did not have a hand rail up the stairs, because despite my attention to detail, it simply did not occur to me that there wouldn't be one .... there is now :)

You might also consider the width of doors for wheelchair access.

Disabled or not, you might consider that the open plan style of most properties makes heating and cooling difficult and expensive. Walls and doors, especially to isolate the staircase, will make the property much easier to keep warm at this time of year, so brick up those arches. Separate rooms are good :)

We actually went through this exercise at work last year. We contacted the developers we work with, and asked if they had any properties with disabled access and features (one of our agents had asked us specifically for a client). All our developers came back to us with the same answer - if the build is at a stage where these features can be incorporated, it wouldn't be a problem!

Yeah, we asked about that, and obviously this is easier to do before the brickwork and plastering, so wouldn't incur any extra cost. There would be extra costs if the doors have to be widened after the build.

What adaptations are needed for equipment, baths, showers, taps, sinks etc have been needed, are certain flooring types better then others. Wheelchairs is an obvious requirement but there are dozens of mobility needs and Im trying to identify these.
