Friday nights on BBC Radio Stoke is 'football phone in'

There's a bit of a character who rings in - calls himself 'Pottermouth'

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, he rang in with this.

BBC R-Stoke put some pictures with it and put it on Youtube.

Embarrassingly, the very first picture is of me!

Enjoy (possibly?)

Bizarrely, the link wil work from the UK, but not from abroad :-(

It's an 8mb file, I could e mail it ;-)

Alternatively, can you search for it from you tube's main site.

I just typed 'pottermouth' into the main 'video search' on the youtube homepage and it came up with it (the second one is better)

Can you see it?????????????

Pete's probably secretly hoping Stoke don't go up, I mean he never expected it in his lifetime. He will be split on who to support next season if Stoke are in the Prem.
You watch, mind King Tony or Walking in a Pulis Wonderland doesn't have the same ring does it ?
Gary 8)
He could always buy a shirt with one half black and white stripes and the other red and white stripes.

Sorry to disappoint you Gary :( I've never supported Stoke & I never will :o

I may have been born there & lived there till I was 19 but I've never supported them :D :D

As for them being promoted, I hope they do, then not only will I rip the crap out of you when they beat you, I'll also be able to rip the crap out of my brother when we stuff them again

I'm one of the guys in the first picture, if anyone's interested????

Being reported today that if they get promoted Stoke will have to pay Newcastle 4 million quid for Shola! That's on top of a 575k loan fee!

Makes Chopra look like a bargain - hope they're not going to be relying on his goals keeping them up....

Hmm .... he hasn't completed a game yet and is currently being kept out of the team by our useless (IMHO) '4 goals this season' centre forward.

It was a risk to plump for the amoeba but it looks like you will go up anyway, more thanks to Lawrence than anything.
£3.5M is only a small chunk of the £60m they'll get for being promoted, I'm sure they'll be happy with that.

Call me an old cynic if you wish ;-) but they get the 60m, give it all to the overrated/overpaid players, we 'customers' get no entertainment, and next year we're back where we started as perennial underachievers, much like (I'm sorry to say) all the teams in the North East

It depends on what you consider underachievement to be. These days it's very difficult to break the stranglehold the big 4 have and therefore win something.
It's not all about winning something is it ? I mean I watch my lot and sometimes come away in a bad mood but I still renew the season ticket for the following season cos I enjoy the banter and meeting mates etc.
What would you call an achievement for Stoke ?
Personally I would say staying up would be a massive achievement for Stoke. We managed it just, but spent £40m on players. Derby didn't manage it and Brum may not either and they are the three that came up last year.
When Roy Keane arrived at our club last season, we were third bottom of the Fizzy Pop league. We won it. That was an achievement for us.
Keeping us in the Premier this season was an achievement that Keane and Quinn are more than happy with. The fans are too, which is important. Averaging crowds of 45,000 when you are at the bottom is an achievement. The club have stated their aim next year is to challenge the mid table teams like West Ham, Spurs and who knows maybe Villa. Let's see if they achieve that.
It is a fact that players are overvalued and expect ridiculous wages. Our problem was attracting the players Keane wanted to the club. They wouldn't come cos it's the cold North East. Stoke may not have that problem but will have a problem when it comes to wages me thinks.
I wish Stoke well but not at the expense of my club. I know fans of other North East clubs will say that we don't aim high enough but I like to think we are realists. Let's see what they say.
There again they might not care to reply to your little dig at North East football.

If you consider factors like attendances and money spent then Newcastle have definitely underachieved for a long time, aside from a couple of short spells under Keegan then Robson.

In my opinion we should be an established top half Premier League side, pushing for Europe every season and challenging seriously in the dometic cups. The top 4 gravy train makes it harder to break that monopoly every season - just a shame we fell off it at exactly the wrong time (we were regularly ahead of Chelsea before the Russian showed up)

It will probably take one of the current 4 to implode for anyone else to break in there now - looked like Arsenal might do so last season, but prime candidates next might be Liverpool if they can't sort out their boardroom wranglings.

Behind that, there's probably 8-10 teams now with bucketloads of cash, so attracting players is tougher than ever, and the main difference more than ever will likely be who has the managers that can make the biggest difference - happy enough with KK in that respect, and Villa look well set with O'Neill and Moyes seems sorted at Everton. Too early to say with Ramos, Sven looks like he's away, and both Keane and Southgate are still learning the ropes. Redknapp is OK but I can't stand him, Hughes doesn't have much cash at Blackburn and Curbishley is rubbish.

The rich keep getting richer though, and for new teams getting promoted survival is getting much, much tougher - a good start is crucial - aim for 35 points and hope for the best....

actually gary i couldn't agree with you more, for boro to have been in the top flight as long as they have is a massive achievement for an area with a population as small as it is, the fact that we have been to 5 finals and similar number of semis in the last 12 years makes it even more enjoyable. i do not get the same feeling watching the boro as i did in 86/87 when we were in the old div 3 and had just survived winding up. but for boro this is one of the most succesfull periods in our history.

with more and more clubs getting taken over by billionaire backers (and that is clubs outside the top 4) it is even harder to break into the top 10 never mind the top 4. as long as you team is commited on the pitch you can ask no more

Looks like I opened a bit of a can of worms ;-)

Without sounding like a 'grumpy old man' I yearn for the 'good old days'

There was a chance of promotion and a real hope of success.

We won the League Cup in 1972 - big deal I hear you say - we also qualified for Europe on a couple of occasions as we hovered around the upper echelons of the top division.

There was genuine hope of success and pride in our achievement.

Now, what do we have?

The whole football world is taken over by the premier league 'jazz fest'
The next three weeks is gonna be awful with manure and chelski featured on at least five of the six pages of footy in the paper.
Thank God that Pompey are playing Cardiff in the cup!

Nobody, well, not many, support their local team anymore!
I went "up 'anley duck" (a local colloquialism) yesterday - JJB has manure shirts abounding on the shelf. The Stoke City Store was full of stock, but empty of people.
The balance of power is all wrong, and I haven't a clue what to do about it :?
Maybe if I bought Sky and banned the showing of 'BIG FOUR' games that'd be better. The sooner they have their own super league the better IMHO, as long as it's subscription only, and for the newspapers as well! Maybe the rest of us would get a look in?
I could go on, but ...............

That'll do for now!

JB,
Your days of Shilton,Hudson, Greenhoff and the rest are long gone. If you stay up ( and you haven't got there yet !) that will be a great achievement.

Very serious.

You want me to be pleased that my team will loose three quarters of their games next season.

That fact doesn't excite me greatly, sorry, but that's more to do with my previous rant about the whole state of football.

Well what do you think will happen to Stoke next season ?
I think they will struggle big time and will do very well to stay up. I am not in the know when it comes to Stoke's business and you being from down there may know something that I do not know.
What do you think will happen ?
Gary

As you say, I think they'll struggle, which I'm not looking forward to one bit.

But maybe, just possibly, they might do a Reading or Wigan, who knows????

The 'upper echelons' are stable.

The manager loves the chairman and vice versa. The chairman owns bet365.com and the club don't have big debts, so maybe ......................

Let's enjoy the jubilation now and cope with the premier league when it comes in August.

Aye, the top of the league is a closed shop, and even breaking into midtable is getting harder - saw this on another forum, highlights how things have changed since the Champion's League money started getting ridiculous:

1991. Arsenal 7 points clear of Liverpool so little change there but Palace 3rd, Leeds 4th, Man U 6th, Wimbledon 7th.

1992. Leeds beat Man U by 4 points, Wednesday 3rd. LFC 6th, Chelsea 8th.

1994. Man U win it but Blackburn 2nd, Newcastle 3rd, Liverpool 8th.

Things like Palace, Sheff Wed etc finishing in the top 3 just wouldn't happen any more :(

Even Keegan was saying after our match last night that he doesn't think we'll be able to break the top 4 in the next 3 years - even if you've got the money, getting the players is tricky, when all the real top ones want to be in the Champs league.
