Hi all

First i would like to thank you all for replying to my last post. And i would like to say what a great bunch you lot are, and i think this site is just brill, i shall be passing the word about THANK YOU ALL.

Ok my next question is what is the best thing about living in cyprus and the worst, why am i asking well my sister <we> asked me to put this post up, as she wants to move to cyprus, and wants to know all your thoughts about life in cyprus good and bad.

She has grand kids at the age off 44 one is 3 the other is 2 and 1 on the way, so she is worried about leaving them. But i told her there still cheap flight to and from cyprus she could come back at anytime, and they could come and visit, as it only 4 hrs flight.

So if you could share your good and bad points about living in cyprus i would be very grateful.

Thank you so much for all your help

Best Regards
Mark

Hi Mark,

Well Cyprus is not cheap and neither are flights, so don't expect thr family over in the school holls !!!

Is your sister planning on working, and what makes her want to come to Cyprus ?

Cyprus has so much to offer with a lovely climate, nice people and more relaxed way of life.

We have been here nearly a year and the one thing I did not plan, as it was a case of ' we won't know if we don't try' is how much I would miss my family, friends and social life. So if your sister is very close to her children and grandchildren it may be very hard emotionally.

I know we all have our own life to lead but if it was me personally I would stay put for a few years and watch those chicks grow, as she won't get those times back and Cyprus ain't going anywhere.

Good Luck in all that she chooses to do :D

Hi Mark. As you know i am not in Cyprus living yet so i cant answer all your post. But i do feel you only get one life and you have to live it. I also have grandchildren they live in the south of England (IAM IN SCOTLAND) But theres web cam, photo sharing, msm skype, and you enjoy it so much seeing them for holidays. When they are older i am sure they will love to vist Cyprus,ok so theres days when you miss them and wish you could just be with them but some times when you have them for a few weeks its like nice to see you but nice to see you go  or am i just a grumpy granny.we all are different, Just because we are not there does not mean we love them any less. You sister will have a lot to think about take time plan reseach if it feels right go for it.

Others will tell you all about the good points about living in Cyprus (of which there are many), but I prefer to warn of some of the pitfalls. It may not make you happy, but it could save you a lot of money and pain.

There are four things that will determine whether you can live happily in Cyprus or will join the many who return to the UK.

1. Cultural Differences - We are the immigrants here. We do not determine how life is run in Cyprus. We don't even have a vote at national level, so our opinions will count for little. Some things about the way Cypriots organise their lives will infuriate (see the parallel thread), and there is very little you can do about it. Some people grow to hate their lives here for this reason. If you cannot adapt to the way things are, rather than the way you think they ought to be, you will not enjoy life here one bit.

2. Friends and Family - Some people simply cannot live without their friends and family around them. If you are one of these and find yourself a couple of thousand miles away with little possibility of personal contact on a regular basis, you will be lonely and unhappy. A once-a-year visit from the kids or grand-kids if you are lucky, and a chat at the weekend via a Skype video link may not be enough. You can make new friends, but you cannot make a new family.

3. Income - Financially, Cyprus is great for pensioners from the UK who have no debts and who have a steady income from a UK source. For those who have to come here to earn a living, life can be very hard. There is nothing like the social welfare structure available in the UK (which is where a lot of your UK taxes go). Here the taxes are low, so you have to provide your own services and safety net.

4. Health Care - Although there are certain categories of people, pensioners especially, who will be able to take advantage of state aided health care, most will have to fund their own health care provision. Those in the state system too, might bear in mind that here there is not the wide range of services that you have come to expect. The state system provides excellent care as far as it goes, but it is a bit chaotic. There are particular worries for the elderly and infirm as there is not (yet) the availability of care homes for those no longer able to look after themselves. (However having had some experience of this in the UK, things there are not so rosy for the elderly and infirm either).

I have said it many times, but the message is one that people don't want to hear. Cyprus is not Britain with sunshine. UK laws and practices don't apply here, and Cyprus does not have the same anal adherence to rules and regulations as does Britain. What you see initially as a free and easy relaxed life style, can, if you are so disposed, very quickly drive you crazy.

Finally never ever drag an unwilling partner here. That is a sure recipe for disaster and frequently marriage break-up. You both need to be committed to the move and all it entails or you will live to regret it.

A sobering fact is that of those who come to make a life here, as many as 80% will leave. Some of those who remain will be trapped here financially unable to leave.

As for me, I have had property here since 1990 and holidayed here before that. I love living here. I have little desire to return to the UK even to visit (though occasionally I do). I don't have issues with the culture, I am reasonably secure financially and prefer to make my own way in the world - to choose what services I want and which I don't. Sure there are things that frustrate, but nothing worth losing sleep over.

There may be a few more buildings around and Cyprus is moving more from a food producer to a food importer, as people capitalize on the value of their assets, while we still want to come here in large numbers, but essentially the place is the same as it was 20 years ago. Long may it remain so!

Hi all

Thanks for your replies back. My sister would like to work over there with us, but is only worried about leaving her grand kids, she has been to cyprus over 10 times in the last year, and loved every moment off it and wished she could stay longer.

I am lucky i have 2 boys age 17 and 19 both working full time, and do not want any kids yet :D phewwwww not going to be a grand dad yet then. They can support themselves in our house pay bills ect ect so we do not have to worry about them so much, and they told us to move out to cyprus and live life to the full.

As some off you know we have a villa in cyprus, milou village near polis, very close to the sulphur springs, and been to cyprus many many times over the last 2yrs to see our new build villa being built. My wife wants us to move out there this april, but is a bit worried about our boys leaving them alone will they cope on there own. I say leave them to it they have to learn to cope, a bit harsh i know but a true fact, they will leave the nest one day any way so this would be a good start for them to learn.

We had a family meeting last night, and come up with this plan of action, me my wife and sister and her hubby will move out in april into our villa until july, then in july my sister and my wife will come back to the uk for 1 mth in the school holidays to visit family, while there are back in uk me and brother in law will stay to carry on with our donut business working 7 days a week ouch. Then in oct o8 the family will come on holiday and stay with us for 3 weeks. What we have not yet decide is about christmas uk or cyprus. We all agree that we can manage without our partners for the 1 mth. Do you think this could work out all ok, we not to worried about the cost off flights back to the uk ect ect as there is some great deals going on at the moment. was over in cyprus last week and it only cost us £90 gbp return and in july i found £120 gbp return for the girls each.

Let me know what you honest thoughts are
Best Regards
Mark

Sounds ok on paper .. them flight prices are very good also..
What you will have to be wary of is getting your business of the ground, Also .... trust me , If it takes off you will have many copycats right behind you ..

Hi Neil

We know there will be copy cats right behind us but we have a secret weapon, it our special formula in the donuts that make them so great tasting, and we have one more thing up our sleeve to go with donuts.

It like anything you sell good food, people come back time and time again, sell bad food you will not last long. Trust me come and have a donut then you will see what i mean about our flavour and different choice off coating <not> Also i am sure if we do pay for a permit to trade, they will not flood the market would they???????. Even if they did ours will be the best ever, but you shall see what we mean. If and when we get started.

Now that you are starting to sound cunning, you may have a chance. I was a baker confectioner for 10 years and have made my share of donuts, both types, cake and dough ...
are you talking about the pre-mix cake type with the traveling fryer ? ..

Neil

Lets just say come and try our donuts, as i not giving anything away, as you was a baker for 10yrs ??? all i can say at this time Neil is that you will be very suprised at what i have to offer, and very very hard to copy, as you need to know what is in the donuts to copy. All the events we been to people always ask what in them to make them so yummy. It a trade secret but i am sure once you taste them<as> you might click on  . all our donuts are hand made from scracth no pre mix . And i can get everything in cyprus so no shipping to worry about.I looking forward to serving you Neil :D

Free donuts! This place gets better every day! :D

Some decent balanced answers on this thread generally - I think KG in particular has covered the potential pitfalls very well, although I would balance it by saying that until you try it you really never know - if I had been in possession of all the facts before I moved here I might never have done so, but 4 years later I'm very glad I did!

Different if you have dependents as you obviously have to factor that in, but as long as you come with some kind of potential exit strategy in mind you'll be just fine.

KG - (Posted: Fri Jan 25, 2008 10:22 am) - excellent post.

Even though I am not a resident yet, I found myself nodding (...in agreement, not nodding off!) with your words.

We all carry our own social microclimate with us where ever we go. But nowhere's 100% perfect - we always have to twiddle the settings to try to stay in our comfort zone. We adjust friends, food, locality, home, garden, activities, finances and so on; some large adjustments there, some fine-tuning there.

Obviously the less fiddling with the dials we have to do, the easier life is. Now and then, you may tune in to a station that, though you didn't intend to listen, is actually quite pleasant. A few such happy incidents later and you have found that you don't have to be as fussy about those knobs. ...You can make conversation with the locals in the kafenion; you can pick up the langauge; you can learn to siesta through midsummer midday heat; you can adjust to non-24-hour shopping; you don't need a lawn, and so on.

And as your social microclimate's knobs get left, untwiddled, to gather dust, you unwind -- but only if you've got an ear for the music, for the Cyprus breeze whispering to you in relaxing tones.

I may not be resident, but Cindy and I have been visiting for over ten years, staying longer and longer each time, so I speak from some personal practical experience.

Maybe the dispassionate views of a casual visitor like you and I can do a better job of President. if I win you can be No 2.

If you were President, what would you do with it?
