We have had a couple of quotes to bring over our cherished possessions, including our Honda Civic which is nearly 4 years old. We are still debating whether to bring the car over as well as it is more expensive for a 40 foot container than a 20 ft one. Can anyone help and point me in the right direction to find out how much duty we will have to pay if we bring the car in? I think I have read somewhere that there is a calculator or something. We would prefer to bring it, but it may all come down to cost ultimately.

Incidentally, the quotes for a 40 ft container are in the region of £4800 plus VAT. Does this sound reasonable????

Hi Tina

It depends on a hell of a lot of factors - for us to have sold our Land Rover Discovery, which had hardly any miles on it and to have bought over here we would have lost a hell of a lot of money.

We decided to ship over: it was no big deal to deal with customs ourselves. We have now got Cypriot number plates and are legal.

It cost us approx cy£1600 in registration, plus cy£25 excise duty.

Our car too has very low mileage, even though it is 4 years old. I know Verity said that if a car is under 1600cc then the cost is pretty reasonable, and ours is just under the 1600. I also know that 2nd hand cars hold their price well in Cyprus so a similar car would probably cost us quite a bit.

Hi Tina

Work out what it would cost you to bring your car and register it, as to selling it and buying over here.

You might get a surprise and decide it is worth bringing it in the end.

We used M & S Shippers and were very pleased with them. Everything went without a hitch, nothing too much trouble for them.

Why dont you get a few quotes, never stick to one.

You can get the excise duty calculator from http://www.mof.gov.cy/mof/customs/custo ... enDocument. Put in the exact engine capacity, not merely 1600cc!

How much shipping costs will depend on how much work the shipper has to do for you. Packing is very labour intensive. You could send the car by RoRo and save some money.

Thanks to all who have replied.

Unfortunately we have had a pig of a time with our PC's at this end since yesterday so I have been offline.

Congrats Molly, I will have to catch up now that I am back online!!!

When I moved here I used GB Liners who offered RoRo or container shipping for the car, which I was fortunate enough to sell before I left. Shipping it would have been a last resort as there would have been CY£6000 duty to pay on a car that was worth little more than that figure.

Ask your shipping company.

Tina, you might be entitled to a duty free vehicle so do check the Customs website for the criteria required.

We shipped our Landrover Freelander in (courtesy of M&S too) and have just been sanctioned for the duty free discount so we're in the process now of sorting out the final hurdle of the plates. The system, I thought, was easy enough but has taken 10 months and several visits to Nicosia customs house....a bit time consuming and the first trip can be confusing but after than, no probs.
