Same in the UK Rick, they are closing daily, both large chains and small shops. A lot hung around for a year or so when property prices crashed, but now they are going under at a speed on knots. Having said that, a lot of new letting agencies are opening. When I started mine some 12 years ago, most of the estate agents I know said they wouldnt touch lettings, "Far too complicated and volatile". And guess what...

Hi Rick, two have closed near us, Coral bay end in the last couple of months. I will take a wild guess your 10 will by the end of the Summer be 3 or 4. They seem to be shutting quicker than it takes to start a row on here :celeb2 and that takes a bit of beating :tickedoff Richard

It could be suggested that previously there was rich pickings for all with the minimum of work involved. Many will now have to adapt or die.

i would say that with all the websites doing this stuff too this place will be awash with folk trying to sell houses when nobody is buying.
recent conversations with the 3 main ones here went briefly like this.

agent one (english), cheapest house we have on the books is €425000, (me) really you selling many, agent one, not sold a house since november 2007

agent two (english and cypriot), sold one in january totally out of the blues its been shocking, luckily rentals have been keeping us going just about.

agent three, (cypriot) mhhh nothing, not for a long time nothing at all, how long would you think it might last, (me) i think things would reach 2006 levels for at least 5 or 6 years maybe longer (not that i have any clue i just remember last time), agent three, (grunts) i might retire.

but there is a light at the end of the tunnel possibly, even though it hasn't worked anywhere else in the world

From a few days ago:
The Cyprus government has announced yesterday its new housing
plan for low income families. The plan will make 200 million euro
available for loans through the Housing Finance Corporation.

The housing plan applies to couples acquiring their first permanent
residence in Cyprus or European citizens who live permanently in
Cyprus the last five years and have a yearly income of up to 40,000
euro. The plan covers houses up to 200 sqm all over Cyprus.

The loan can be used for either building a house in an existing plot
or buying an existing house or apartment. The maximum loan amount
can be up to 200,000 euro. The interest rate on the loan will be set to zero
for the first two years and after that it will equal the current interest
rate of the Housing Finance Corporation.
