Hi I am Alison - Ali 2 if you like as I notice that Ali is already there...

I move to Peyia in July 09. I have already signed up for a lovely house when I was over earlier in May. I started packing today, which is so exciting.

I wanted to ask whether anyone has Sky Multi Room. I hope to have Sky but not sure if I should sign up for Multi Room which is on offer over here at half price and I could bring out my old sky box.

Am really looking forward to coming over so many thanks in advance for any responses.

Thanks

Spookily that did sort of happen when I moved to Berkhamsted. A neighbour I got to know on day 2 had been born in the house I had just moved from in York.

:greetings Hi Ali 2,

Regards Sky - I told Sky I was going to be living with my son in Beverley (Don't tell them you are going out of UK!!!!) and I carried on with the same direct debit for monthly payment from my UK bank. I brought my Sky + box with me to Cyprus (I had, had it over twelve months in UK in Leeds) and it can be used here without being connected to telephone) Here I arranged for a 2.7metre Dish to be fitted (Normsat did that for me on my second move!!) I have had JR Sat Services do a modification to the Tripod 'legs' for better reception. (I will have been here in Paphos 6 years in September)

If you want any more info just ask

Many thanks Malsue The house I am moving to has a large sky dish so I will bring my Sky Plus box and card which I have had for over a year. Do you know if Sky Multi-room also can be fitted in Cyprus or whether its worth buying the subscription for it from Sky here in UK. It means I can have another Sky connection with TV and Box in my bedroom for instance and watch different channels from main TV. It would be half price is £4.90 per month for 12 months.

Thanks very much for your help

Hi Ali2,

:gossip I can't see any reaason why not. The LNB on the dish usually have 4 connections, you will need 2 for your sky + box and leaves 2 spare, unless a neighbour has got a share!!!!

Some of the 'experts' re TV out here will be able to advise you. :greetings

You will have to notify them 'SKY' the address in UK where they will send your monthly mag. (Which I don't bother having sent on) and also I am waiting for an updated 'card' which Sky are in the process of sending out to their 8 million or so customers

Sky multi-room may work for a while but they do insist on having the mulitroom box connected to the landline 24/7, if not they will disconnect it. I checked this with a sky engineer who confirmed it and said the only way around it is if you have had your main sky subscription for over a year which doesnt need the phoneline connected and take that with you.

Do NOT sign up for multi room.
This is one area where Sky are VERY HOT.
You still have to be connected to a telephone line with a UK code to use Multi Room, even after the first year contract expires.
Remember that receiving Sky here is breaking the T & C's of your contract with Sky so you do NOT want to give them any reason for suspicion.
As has been mentioned already you will also need a 2.7 M minimum or preferably a 3 M Dish here to receive Sky here. If your house does not already have one fitted this is going to cost you in excess of €1700 fitted. Unless you can pick one up second hand in which case you are looking in the region of €750 + fitting.
Make sure you still have a UK address you can use for Sky mailing etc. (maybe a family member) and an active UK Bank Account before you leave. (Preferably Nationwide to take advantage of free cash M/C withdrawal in EU)

Brian

Many thanks Daz and Brian for your help.

I will take your advice and not risk my subscription by taking the Multi Room, even though I have had my Sky subscription for about 3 years. The Sky dish at the property looks huge but am not sure of the size of it, although there is a Sky box already there so it should all work.

My next question is the UK address, can it be one where there is already a Sky subscription registered to it, such as my daughter's home where she has Sky? Otherwise I will have to ask my elderly aunt or find someone who doesnt have it.

Isnt it crazy that Sky doesnt supply Cyprus, just think of the additional revenue it would bring in if they did.

Many thanks again

Yes, it can be the address of someone who already has a Sky subscription. Sky don't know that you are not renting a room
from your daughter and have your own box and card.. (this is the story if ever questioned by Sky)

It is better if it is in a different name but I guess that if your daughter is married this will be the case anyway.

Don't forget the bank account. You can't pay subscription from a Cyprus account.

Brian.

Welcome to the site Ali

Yes, agree with everyone else multi-room is a pain had it back in the UK and Sky insisted that it had to have a phone line connected to the second box.

You could try a Sky sender of some type? (just google sky sender) I think you have to watch the same programme as the main telly, but it's an idea.

Also like the name 8-)

Hi all

Does anyone have any opinions/recommendations etc on shipping/removal companies you have used to get your boxes/belongings from UK out to Cyprus? I have been getting some quotes and thought I would ask if anyone can recommend a company they used. Its for boxes only, no furniture, no car.

Many thanks in advance

Ali, I am almost ready to go, will leave the house at 2 this afternoon!

Have fun with the rest of your packing, you only have a short time left yourself in the UK!

Let me know if there is anything you need doing in Cyprus before you get there. My check in at the villa yesterday was a nightmare for Karen so if you want it done before you get there I don't mind doing it, I now still have mine to do again first thing Tuesday morning (nothing goes to plan does it!!) My unpacking will have to wait until I've counted cutlery lol

Anyway try to enjoy your last few weeks, believe me it goes very quickly and before you know it we will be sipping something long and cool down at the harbour

Take care Hunni xx

Days to do, getting few!!

Where are you Diane? I dont see any posts now you are there!

I am busy finalising my shipping and getting quotes. We were away for a few days in France and the weather was hideous, cold and rain rain rain. I just kept thinking, I wish I was in Cyprus (but will I miss the cooling rain? Please tell me I won't).

In spite of myself, I am starting to lose a bit of sleep thinking of all the things still to be done - no doubt the "worrying" about them will take less time than the actual "doing".

:there someone please pat me on on the head and tell me it will be ok ?

You'll be fine Ali - natural I think to worry a bit but as long as long as you keep it in perspective you'll be fine! I always just ask myself "what's the worst that could happen" and that usually gets the job done!

Just don't forget your passport! :D

And you won't miss cooling rain in the slghtest - we have the Med and swimming pools for that purpose instead!

Of course it will be OK.
You are bound to have doubts. We all did to a greater or lesser extent. Just keep focused and you'll be here before you know it and wonder what all the worry was about, whilst sipping a Pina Colada by the pool/
You may miss the cooling rain but not often and there is always a cold shower or a dip in the pool.
I know what I'd rather have.

:greetings Of course everything will be ok, Ali. It would be strange if you weren't going through all these emotions. :there :bearhug

I'm sure we all get a case of the jitters on such a big move, but dont forget at least you have the advantage of knowing people and being a member of Paphos People. Some people move over not knowing anyone..........

The sun is shining the sky is blue and soon you will be here to enjoy it too  ....... :party

Thanks Ali (1) I will have to have a coffee morning when I arrive, or whatever pp people do, to thank everyone. I heard about the dog but not spoken directly to Diane yet. She will be happy to have it I am sure x
