I am impressed with what john is doing at houston medical,
not only have they got a state of the art ambulance,
fully trained paramedics,
but they run a wide range of courses
from health and safety to first aid training classes
and many more..

It would be good if each clinic would fund a fully trained paramedic and maybe have an ambulance share scheme.

I know parameds are not doctors and don't have the knowledge that a doctor has (neither do nurses or midwives), but they are highly trained and have important skills, and if I have been in the community and have needed assistance with a birth I prefer to see a paramedic to a GP who may not have cannulated or even taken blood for several years. I can cannulate but can't carry intravenous fluids. A paramedic has the equipment and the backup skills I need and I have been very grateful to see them.

Surely people with the skills to stabilise and then hand over to the doctor and his knowledge and skills makes sense. I don't understand why the clinics don't all get together on this one.

Are you working on this John? What about getting the ALSO course out here? That would benefit obstetrics.

I know you do the first aid courses, but are you able to get anywhere with the clinics?

Do you mind me asking this on an open forum? Apologies if I should pm you. Just curious to know whether Cyprus is progressing. :D

I am writing yet again to the Health Ministry you may have seen the letter in Cy Weekly on Friday.

We are in discussion with at least one hospital that want us to form a joint venture, once this is set up it is our intention to offer this service to others.

The web site will soon reflect our progress, I did not want to jump ahead and claim things are ready when they are not.

There is one ambulance in Nicosia being given red filters as not allowed to have blue, then it will be inspected by a representative from Health Ministry to see if it can be used as the name suggests.

The other will go shortly after first is returned to us, air conditioning has been fitted to both, each vehicle will be kitted out exactly the same, they both have scoops, spine boards, carry mats, oxygen, defibs, suction units and plenty of other items, these will be added to when funds are available, at this time I am the sole provider of money.

The First Aid side will continue, we brought this in as something that is required and indeed provide some cash flow in, plus showing our name.

There is a broad section of staff waiting, Paramedics, Ambulance Techs, ex police/military drivers and so on.

There is some discussion that jobs are at risk, not the case, we will in fact make more jobs as most crews at present have other tasks within their own hospital, what I am aiming for are regular well trained crews, working to-gether, they know the areas, they KNOW each other, they will be in or around the vehicle ready to go, not at home or somewhere else, probably working in A&E if based at the hospitals, or placed at strategic points within the Paphos area.

The reason they don't get to gether is MONEY, when they put PEOPLE first then we might just save a LIFE or Two.

My target is a Professional Ambulance Service that serves the Paphos and surrounding areas, takes patients to the nearest hospital to save life, then transfer to their own choice when stable, and if they wish to be transferred.

My tasks at the moment are doing Medical Cover for sports activities and large gatherings, we were at the Acker Bilk concert, Cyprus Challenge and the Hot Dog Show have asked for our services.

So a lot has been going on, and still a way to go, however if the Ministry put Paramedics in the Organogram to-day, we would be on the ROAD TO-MORROW.

John, the now defunct 'Sophie's Angels' ambulance service was going to be available to paying customers on a private subscription service. In other words, you could pay a set amount each year (was it around £80 pa?)...and in the event you required an ambulance, you would have call on it. I know it's very early days for you, but do you have future plans for something like this? Lloyd

The original idea was mine, please check out web site and you will find a form that can be filled in and returned, when I am ready to put the service on the road then I will send the BOYS round to collect.

Come and visit us at the office and we are covering the HOT DOG SHOW FREE as it is for charity

Good news John, it would be good news to a lot of people if they knew a reliable ambulance service was available when required and equipped with qualified paramedics as I dont think ambulance personal in Cyprus are given any training, is that correct ?

There have been a few letters in CY Weekly and I will be adding one, this is an ogoing discussion.

There is no infrastructure for training ambulance personnel, I have in the past given them the rolls and responsibilities of Paramedics/Technicians/Drivers etc, plus the training, I did keep the book.

It has been stated that there will be Paramedics by 2010, previously it was to take only 8 months, from Mr SAVVIDES way back in 2002.

I do not see any way that this can be done, just register Paramedics and I will do the rest, I have not even asked them for money, maybe I should

Its great to hear what you're doing but what kind of qualifications do you personally hold, I think it would be good for our members to understand what it takes to be a qualified paramedic, so if you could tell us, if you don't mind, what courses you've done & where you've worked, that way they will understand how experienced your are :D

A bit of self advertising as such :lol: :D

John you have certainly been busy! Your career must be very rewarding, and very admirable.

RAMC? I was an army wife in a previous life and attended RAF Wegberg hospital (stationed in Krefeld) and my son was in BMH Hannover around 1983 (stationed in Celle), ah happy days! Mostly anyway! :)

I spent 12 years in BAOR, near BMH Rinteln, BMH Munster although I was with the field units, when I went to Ulster with 21 Eng Nienberg we used Hanover, visited Wegberg and played rugby against them in the Medical service cup.

Left Germany in 86 for a TA unit in Glasgow, then on to Colchester till I left in 1992.

Taken a few years to gather that CV and you can tell not a spring chicken anymore, however not able to sit back and watch the disasters occuring here when they can be avoided.

I am not saying we would save everyone, but at least we would give them a fighting chance.

Anyway RAMC backwards is CMAR, the sharp end told us it meant CANNOT MANAGE A RIFLE.
