Hi Dawn

My fiance & I moved to Chloraka in September & are not of 'retirement age' yet.

I hadn't worked in the UK since 2000 because of health issues & hoped to find something part-time to get back in the 'working frame of mind' after we were settled. David was to be the main wage earner.

However, walking home from the village taverna one evening, we were invited to join a few locals for a drink at a coffee shop. After chatting for about 10 mins about our move to Cyprus and our future plans, I was offered a full-time job! Bizarre I know, I thought he was joking but established that he was serious and said I was interested to know more. We agreed to talk again the following week as I was going to be busy with our furniture arriving and we returned home somewhat puzzled and bemused by the circumstances. What about interviews, CVs etc etc ??

Long story short, I contacted him the following week & after a short conversation was handed the keys to the office, the code for the alarm and agreed to start on 1st November. My background as a medical secretary/PA stood me in good stead as he wanted an Office Manager in his estate agency & construction company.

Work is a 5min walk to the office & not a pressurised job so I've eased back to work gently with no health issues as yet! David is hunting for security work full-time but has found part-time work at the paintball centre (don't ask) & is pursuing his love as an artist. After doing some 'wall art' in our local bar, as a kind of advertisement, he has been commissioned to do some canvasses for a shop & is hoping this may, in time, turn into a business for him. :P

I guess the crux of this story is..... don't have any fixed ideas, be flexible & open minded about opportunities that may arise. I know plenty of people who have found it very hard to find work, some of who have returned to the UK with sorry tales to tell.

Our story is by no means typical, it's way to bizarre, but it does demonstrate the Cypriot way of doing business which is all 'word of mouth'. Get out & about, speak to anyone who will listen & promote any talents that you have and hopefully you too will be lucky. We are determined to do whatever it takes to make our lives here work & so far so good. We don't earn much (no-one in Cyprus does) but it doesn't cost as much to live here so we are more than happy with our lot. 8)

Whatever you do, all the very best of luck & good fortune to you....... :D :D

Hi Dawn,

Unless you or your hubby have a transferable skill or the money to start up your own business, the wages over here are pretty awful

So unless you are a Architect, Accountant or something they need alot more of over here, then you're better off trying to start a business, find a niche & go for it, no use working for anyone else or you won't get paid a decent enough wage to survive :(

I too am well under the age of retirement & own a small shop, I have exclusive rights on a product which when it takes off will earn me a tidy sum but like all good idea's, they take time & that's what you need to have over here, enough funds or willing to work your hands to the bone to make that time :D

Don't get me wrong, I love what I do & I wouldn't give it up for anything & I would definitely wouldn't work for anyone else again, not in a month of sundays

So good luck in what you decide to get your hubby to do & if you need any more advice, please feel free to ask :D :D

I will never be in the right place then as I seem to be stuck indoors most days - saving money and only go out during the day to get the shopping or go to the bank to put Steve's pittance of a wage in.

I have often wondered if we should move and use my skills in security.I was offered a job but friendship was so strong we did not want to lose it over maybe silly argument.

Not sure if i could be bothered to start allover again work wise.I am carpenter by trade and still keep my hand in but after working full week need chill out.

Best of luck to all the folk that do big move.

Hi All and thank you for you replies

Helen thank you for your post, very encourageing

At the momment , My Husbands Business is roller shutters (over shops) He also does them for Garages , houses , and electric gates
We have noticed that cyprus too as shutters, so were hoping that he could fall into that ...if not we are both very flexible in doing what comes along

Got to say , This is a fantastic site very posotive answers
Other sites have been negative ...that it scared me off lol

we have the russian/cypriot/east european mafias to take care of that!

be warned... the "east europeans" can afford to undercut you on any building related work, and the sri-lankans by even more...

i have a friend who expected to get about £15 m2 for plastering... until he met a couple of sri-lankans who worked for a pound a square metre!

Dawn, you know our story. We have been very lucky.

We knew we would have to work, but felt that we would rather be working over here towards our retirement and getting some of the benefits of the Cypriot way of life, than struggling along in the rat race that is the UK.

We took a risk and it paid off for us. We have never looked back.

Glad to hear you might finally be ready for the move. I might believe it when I see it.
