Parliament on Thursday passed regulations banning outright the use of carrier plastic bags – such as those used in supermarkets and kiosks.

The regulations passed with 37 votes for, while the two Elam MPs voted against. It comes into effect in a year after the law is published in the Official Gazette.

The regulations prohibit the sale of carrier plastic bags at points of sale, and also prohibit the production, distribution, supply and use of plastic bags.

In addition, merchants are obliged to undertake actions to raise public awareness around the need to reduce usage of plastic bags.

According to Akel MP Nicos Kettiros, use of carrier plastic bags has dropped 80 per cent since 2017 when a law passed imposing a €0.06 surcharge per bag at points of sale.

This is a good move ....

most people now use forever shopping bags ...and would be great if we could have paper bags in place of plastic bags for vegetables ...as they are all sold loose which is good and not wrapped

The lesser we all use plastics the better

Migmogs when you say everybody I think that means UK retired expats , in paps I see many others using loads of single use carrier bags. I too forget and on rare occasions need a bag, but not often and I reuse single use packaging as much as possible. I think the government should follow other eu states and put a deposit on glass and plastic bottles, I believe 50cent go a euro is the norm, then you don't throw out of the window you return for money !

I agree with Mouse on this regarding forever bags - and if anything people are using the larger plastic bags for small amounts of fruit and vegetables than the smaller size. Not only does it save them having to pay for a large bag at the till but they can use it to dispose of their rubbish - yet another saving!
